State Seal

A LITTLE IOWA HISTORY
The lands comprising present-day Iowa were part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. In 1812, when Louisiana was made a state, the remaining Purchase lands were attached to the Missouri Territory. After Missouri attained statehood in 1821 the remaining lands were left unorganized until after the Black Hawk War ended in 1832. In 1834 the unorganized lands were attached to the Michigan Territory, at this time comprising all of present-day Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and the Dakotas east of the Missouri River. In 1836 the Wisconsin Territory was organized, including the lands to become Iowa. Michigan became a state in 1837 and the remaining lands attached then to Wisconsin Territory. Thus they remained until 1838 when the Iowa Territory was organized, including lands west of the Mississippi River and east of the Missouri River. Iowa became a state in its own right on December 28, 1846, the 29th state of the Union.   More...
