Iowa Civil War Dead |
A number of individuals from Jefferson County served their county in the "War Of The Rebellion", as it was called in the North, the "War of Northern Aggression" as it was called in the South, or the "Civil War" as we most often refer to it now. Some gave their lives to the cause. Probably, to most at that time, it was thought of as a war to save the Union since prejudice against those of African descent was very much present in Jefferson County.
The information we have available to us at this time comes mostly from newspaper reports from some time after the war. The listing below is for the whole state of Iowa. The accuracy of the information is not to be as trusted as a primary source, such as court or county documents. Neither is it a complete list nor does it list where in Iowa an individual came from. As we find other sources or entries we will add them to this listing; entries that did not appear in the newspaper article have the surname in CAPS.
