Jefferson County Marriages 1838 - 1945 |
|
Due to the work of Orville and Mary Prill in the 1960s and '70s, and of Verda Baird and the Jefferson County Genealogical Society in the years since, Jefferson County has published a wealth of genealogical material. Among that material is the gathering of the marriages of Jefferson County throughout its history. It is with a great indebtedness to these people and the fine volunteers who have transcribed it from those and other sources that we offer this information to you.
Prior to July, 1880, Marriages were not required to be recorded in Jefferson County. Many of the Quaker Marriages (or Society of Friends) were not recorded in the county books. The source for this first group is the Prill Books ('Jefferson County Records, Vol. 1-11').
To make finding Marriages easier, we have listed the names alphabetically by surname for both the bride AND the groom. If you don't find the Marriage you're looking for, consider alternate spellings. There is also the possibility that folks who lived in Jefferson County got married outside the county; popular destinations were the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA (in western Chickasaw County), and Kahoka, MO.
This group of marriage records was added in September, 2017, and extracted from Statewide collections found on Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.com. There are about 140 records which don't have License numbers noted; these were not transcribed from the licenses into the journals for some reason.
This group of marriage records was added in May, 2018, and were also extracted from Statewide collections found on Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.com. There are several records which don't have License numbers noted. Some License numbers follow the county numbering system, and others refer to a Book or Volume and Page number.
This group of marriage records was added in March, 2021, and were extracted from Statewide collections found on Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.com. As of March, 2021, this is the last group of publicly-available records; Iowa law mandates that such records be kept private for a period of 75 years before being released to the public.
