The Swedish Community
Of Jefferson County, Iowa

Jefferson County had a significant settlement of Swedish immigrants that were among the early pioneers of the county.  The Jefferson County settlement was in Lockridge Township not far from the eastern edge of the county.   This community was known as New Sweden.   Later New Sweden would be responsible for another community of Swedish immigrants would locating in Henry County northeast of the Jefferson County settlement.  This was known as Swedesburg.  This and the linked pages are dedicated to those early pioneers from Sweden.

New Sweden  Baptist Church
The first Swedish Baptist Church in America was organized in New Sweden but by the turn of the Century had died out.  The only thing remainig on that spot today is a cemetery and a crumbling stone boulder marker.  Look under "Some Pictures and Names" to see the marker and cemetery.
