Jefferson County had a significant settlement of Swedish immigrants that were among the early pioneers of the county. The Jefferson County settlement was in Lockridge Township not far from the eastern edge of the county. This community was known as New Sweden. Later New Sweden would be responsible for another community of Swedish immigrants locating in Henry County northeast of the Jefferson County settlement. This was known as Swedesburg.
