APRIL 1842 - APRIL 1843

INTRODUCTION

  The original old book of the GAGE GENERAL STORE RECORDS 1842 and 1843 had been donated to the Old Settlers Association of Fairfield after the death of Ebenezer S. Gage in 1859.   It had been stored in the museum area of historical items in the old Fairfield Public Library on Court and Washington Streets.   When the library moved to its new facility at 104 West Adams in May 1996, the book was sold along with many others.   Before it got away, Janet Roberts, a member of the Jefferson County Genealogical Society, photo copied it and later it was indexed by Verda Baird.
  Many of the names are in other early records of the county, but were among the families that left Iowa in the late 1840s or the 1850s.   Other settlers stayed in Jefferson County and raised large families and have descendants scattered far and wide.
