Reverend Eli Edwin AUXIER was born in
Mason County, Illinois, on August 10, 1846. He came to Ringgold County in 1870 and joined the Missionary Baptist Church
in 1872. Rev. AUXIER was in charge of the Palestine Church located west of Leon, the church east of Davis City, the
Camden church northeast of Westerville, and the Providence Church southeast of Davis City, all in Decatur County. He
preformed gospel work in both Decatur and Ringgold Counties, residing in Kellerton. Rev. AUXIER died December 2, 1932,
Meridian, Idaho.

Susannah (WAGGONER) BROWN, a widow,
Susannah started the Hickory Grove Church named after the first meeting of the
congregation in a grove of hickory trees. Susannah was known as the "mother of the church" which was located
eight miles south of Mount Ayr. Susannah was born in Kentucky on May 31, 1807, married William BROWN in 1828, in Washington
County, Indiana, and died in November of 1874. She was interred at Middle Fork Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.
Reverend William BROWN, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, Mount Ayr, established a
mission church at Eugene in 1875. The evangelistic spirit prompted four young Ringgold County women to
dedicate their lives to missionary service: Josephine STHAL who went to Darjeeling, India; Helen GALLOWAY
who went to Chung King, China; Lydia WILKINSON who went to Foo Chow, China; and Fannie PERKINS who went
to Rangoon, Burma. Rev. BROWN was born December 2, 1836, Monmouth, Illinois, and died January 2, 1910 at Fowlerville, California.

Reverend William Monroe CALFEE, a Methodist Episcopal minister, was born in Franklin County, Indianan, April 16,
1825, of pious Baptist parents [William CALFEE (1777-1848)] of Virginia and Indiana. He was converted in his eighteenth year,
but afterwards relapsed into sin. In 1845, he was reclaimed; in 1848 removed to Marion County, Indiana, and was licensed to exhort.
In 1852, he received a license to preach; moved to Iowa in 1850, and in 1861 entered Western Iowa, now Des Moines Conference,
wherein he labored zealously and successfully until his death, January 7, 1868 [with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa].
Mr. CALFEE was a warm-hearted Christian; a ready debater, remarkable for pungent wit and scathing sarcasm; an estraordinary
temperance lecturer; but, as a preacher, unrefined, and sometimes even course. Pastor of

Reverend Dr. Joseph CALHOUN, was born on November 27, 1842, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and died at Burlington Junction, Missouri, on August 6, 1922. Rev. CALHOUN graduated from Westminster College of New Wilmington, Pennsylvania in 1869; and Xenia Seminary of the Unived Presbyterian Church, Xenia, Ohio, on April 23, 1871. He was ordained by the Des Moines Presbytery as the pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, Indianola, Iowa, on November 12, 1873, serving there until December 27, 1896. Rev. CALHOUN assumed the pulpit of the United Presbyterian Church in Mount Ayr, Iowa, on June 15, 1898. He was elected as Moderator of the Synod of Iowa in 1884, and received an Honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Monmouth College in 1893.
Rev. CALHOUN served during the Civil War with Company H of the 140th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry from August 22, 1862 to May 31, 1865, when he was mustered out of service, Washington, D.C. Rev. CALHOUN was wounded twice: first at Chancellorsville, Virginia in May of 1863; second, at Hatcher's Run on February 5, 1865. Emma "Verona" (CALHOUN) JOHNSTON, Rev. CALHOUN's daughter, was the

Reverend Orr CAMPBELL
was born near Farmington, Lee County, Iowa, on May 22, 1854, and died at the age of 79 on April 19, 1934. Rev.
CAMPBELL was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1872. He was a district missionary to the Baptist churches in southern
Iowa for eight years, and was a minster at New Market, Fremont, Hedrick, Greenfield, Cambria, Humeston, and Oskaloosa,
Iowa.
Rev. CAMPBELL also was a pastor of Delphos 1st Baptist Church,
south of Delphos, Iowa.
Reverend Ward Beecher CAMPBELL
was born in Athelstan, Iowa, on August 5, 1909. He was ordained as a pastor with the Free Methodist Church in 1951
and served the Free Methodist Church in Mount Ayr for 20 years until retiring in 1974. After beating the odds with
a bout of cancer, Rev. CAMPBELL returned to the pulpit and ministered another 30 years. Rev. CAMPBELL died April 26, 2007.

Reverend W. W. DANNER, minister at Caledonia Episcopal Church and the Kellerton Methodist Church, 1879-80 Reverend William Edwin DARROW, clergyman, was born September 2, 1864 in New York City. Since 1889 he has
filled pastorates in various cities in the State of New York; in 1909 - 1912 in Peru, Nebraska; and since 1912
in Mount Ayr, Iowa. He has been president of the Young People's Union, and since 1912, president of Murray Baptist
Association, Sunday School Association, and the Baptist Young Peoples Union of Iowa.
Rev. DARROW was the minister of the First Baptist Church of
Mount Ayr in 1915 when the new church was built.
Evangelist Mrs. Anna DAVIS of the Evangelical church conducted tent meeting in August at the Luther
DENNIS farm in Middle Fork Township during the 1880's. It was said that the singing of hymns during these
tent meeting could be heard from two miles away.

was born in Erie County, Pennsylvania, on October 21, 1836. He was a pioneer minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church,
serving Ringgold County, Iowa, for over 55 years. He served as a Methodist circuit rider and often preached at Redding, Iowa. Rev. ELLIOTT died at the home of his son A. W. ELLIOTT of Mount Ayr

Father (unknown) said the first mass in Ringgold County from the Luke SHAY cabin near Maloy around
the year 1855 or 1856. The SHAY parlor served the Irish Catholics in the Maloy vicinity until a chapel was
built in 1875.

Reverend Jeremiah T. "Jerry" HUGHES
was born September 20, 1843, West Virginia, and died at his home in Conway, Iowa on march 26, 1920. He was ordained a
deacon on September 7, 1862, and an elder on September 4. 1864. Rev. HUGHES was appointed to the Harmony (present-day)
Conway church in the fall of 1872. He organized Methodist churches at Red Oak, Conway, Mount Ayr, Clarinda, Glenwood, Diagonal,
Afton, Arispe, Hopeville, Hillsdale, Blockton, and Bedford, and was a member of the MO-Ark Conference. Rev. HUGHES
was also a circuit rider in the Mount Ayr vicinity.

Reverend David INCHES was born in Balbigee, Scotland on October 18 1834. He came to America with his family
at the age of 8 years. During the Civil War, Rev. INCHES was a member of Company C of the 44th Regiment of the Iowa
Infantry. He graduated from the Monmouth, Illinois, seminary in 1867 and was ordained as a United Methodist Presbyterian
minister in 1869. Rev. INCHES married Harriet J. "Hattie" JOHNSTON in Scotch Grove, Iowa on July 4, 1867. Rev. INCHES
pastored at Spring Grove, Illinois from 1869 to 1887; North Bend, Nebraska from 1876 to 1887; worked in Nebraska and
South Dakota from 1887 to 1889; and pastored in Redding, Iowa from 1889 to 1894. The family moved to Sterling, Kansas,
in 1894. Rev. INCHES became blind in 1903, and died November 10, 1914, Sterling, Kansas, with interment at Sterling.
Harriet J. "Hattie" (JOHNSTON) INCHES was born in Steuben County, Indiana on November 4, 1884, and died in Sterling,
Kansas, on November 16, 1917. They were the parents of Ida R. (INCHES) HILL STRANEY; Mary Jane "Jennie" INCHES

one of the pioneers of Ringgold County, was born near Indianapolis, Indiana, and settled in Rice Township in 1855, and
died in 1904, Ellinsville, North Dakota. He was a Baptist minister. Rev. SHERRILL was interred at Benton Cemetery,
Ringgold County, Iowa.
Reverend Jesse SHERWOOD, first minister to preach in Ringgold County, 1856 from the TALLEY log cabin, the beginnings of the Bethel Church. Public services for all denominations
were held in Ringgold County's first courthouse, which was a log cabin. Later, when the frame court house was built on
the east side of the square in Mount Ayr, church services were conducted on the second floor of the court house.

Mount Ayr, Chariton, Conrad, Grinnell, and Pleasant Hill of Ringgold County, Iowa, and preached regular radio broadcasts from Marshalltown, Iowa. Rev.
SKILES died at the age of 95 years in Colchester, Illinois, on November 29, 1999 at the Argyle Lake Nursing Center.

1816, in County Wicklow, Delganey, Parish of Shehana, Ireland. He came to Canada with his family at the age of three years.
In 1836, Rev. SMITH joined the Methodist Episcopal church, then united with the Methodist Protestant Church, being
ordained in 1841. Rev. SMITH moved to Sangamon County, Illinois in 1849 where he served as a circuit rider. Rev. SMITH
and his family moved to Buchanan County, Iowa, in 1857, then moved to Monroe Township of Ringgold County in 1876. Rev. SMITH is credited as being the
founder of the Beaconsfield Methodist Church.

was born in Putnam County, Indiana, on March 4, 1833. He studied three years at the United Presbyterian
Theological Seminary at Xenia, Ohio and was ordained. He came to Iowa in 1879 and was the United Presbyterian minister of
Mount Ayr. In July of 1886 Rev. TEDFORD purchased the Ringgold County Republican and ran the Ringgold Record
newspaper for several years. Rev. TEDFORD died September 13, 1924, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa.

Rev. WISHARD was born November
20, 1800, in West Virginia. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1825 and was ordained in 1855 and served as
minister for the Mount Ayr Church. Rev. WISHARD died on March 26, 1891, Mount Ayr, and was interred at Rose Hill
Cemetery.

Reverend Samuel Miller ZIKE was born December 5, 1863 in Indiana, and died June 25, 1938, with interment at Benton Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa, beside his wife Bertha Ann (OSTRANDER) ZIKE (1864-1956). Rev. ZIKE was a Civil War Veteran. Rev. Zike was the United Brethren minister at
Beaconsfield in the late 1890's.
