Ernest HEGGS was fatally injured Monday morning [September 30] about 5:30 while unloading some brush on his farm. Mr. HEGGS had
taken a truck load of brush to the pasture southeast of his home to unload in a ditch. He had backed the truck, a
1949 International, to the ditch, parked it and had started to unload the brush. It was concluded that the brakes
failed and in backing, struck Mr. HEGGS and pinned him underneath, crushing his body.
Highway 2, about six and one-half miles east of Mount Ayr, received a new coating early Sunday morning when
approximately $1,000 worth of cream was dumped on it, the result of a car-truck accident. The accident happened
when a 1953 Ford truck, owned by the Cudahy Packing Company of Beford, struck a 1955 Ford driven by John O.
BEATTY, 72, of Kellerton, as it attempted to turn into the driveway of the U. L. MILLSAP farm.
Eight Mount Ayr Lions were recognized for their long period of service to Lionism during the regular meeting of the
club held Wednesday night of last week. Of the group, six were honored as charter members of the Mount Ayr club which
was organized in 1947. They are Dr. Chas. W. LAWHEAD, Leslie PARK, Ames CROSS, Harold WEBB, John H. DENHART and
Milt HENDERSON. Although not charter members, W. B. CUNNING and Dr. George LEE were given recognition as 10-year
members.
The 75th anniversary of the founding of the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr will be observed with appropriate
services and programs next Sunday, Oct. 6, according to announcement by the pastor, Rev. Clyde E. MOSHER.
Marcial FENNEMA of this city is one of 79 coeds at the State University of Iowa, Iowa City, to be accepted as
candidates for the Scottish Highlanders, the world's largest all-girl bagpipe band. More than 350 tried out for the
group. Miss FENNEMA is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman FENNEMA and a 1957 graduate of the Mount Ayr high school.
Four Ringgold county 4-H boys had their record books selected for state competition at the district meeting held last
week in Creston. They were Roger STANLEY, Beaconsfield; Richard WILSON, Hatfield, MO; Melvin GRAY, Mount Ayr; and,
Raymond STANLEY, Kellerton.
The formal opening of the new Horne's Rexall Store in Mount Ayr will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4 and 5. The
event will also mark the 20th anniversary of the store.
