I'm not sure you'll find a legal adoption record that early. many times neighbors or family just took in kids and gave the kids their surname. if you read all of my answers in the chain below your query that is about all I know. have you looked for obits of all of he people involved. also look in the census around 1900 or when you think he was adopted and look for neighbors who might have adopted him if you live around johnson county you could go to the court house or the adminisraion bldg. and see if they can tell you about legal adoption records
