"The McCleary Homestead"

"A farm, known as the McCleary Homestead, has been in the McCleary family for more than 95 years. It is located on a line between Des Moines and Locust Grove townships.

"It was originally belonged to Simpkin McCleary who went to California to dig gold in 1851. He died in Panama on his way home with his gold. The farm passed to Simpkin's father, Col. Benj. McCleary, who had come to Iowa in 1837.

"Eighty acres of the farm was transferred by Col. Benj. McCleary to his son, John H. McCleary, by deed dated Jan. 11, 1854 and filed for record on the 20th day of the same month.

"On the death of John H. McCleary the land passed to his son, J. Lewis McCleary, and later to Nelson McCleary, the second son of John McCleary. Nelson is the present owner of the farm."
