OBITUARY

Mary THOMA was born at Wendelsheim near Stuttgardt, Germany, December 8th, 1830. She came to the United States of America, in 1854, landing at New York, June 5th. She was united in marriage at Utica, N. Y., to Bernhardt THOMA, Sept. 25th, 1854, and with her husband moved to Jefferson county, Iowa, in 1858. For sixty-five years she has continuously resided in this county. Sixty-three years ago she moved on the farm now owned by her son William THOMA, at which place she peacefully passed away July 26th, 1923.

Mrs. THOMA endured the hardships of early pioneer life in Iowa, and yet lived to see and enjoy the many conveniences of the present day.

About twenty years ago the deceased went to Europe for a visit at the home of her birth. Upon her return to the United States, the land of her adoption, she had a very fixed opinion that the United States, the land of her adoption, was the best country in the world in which to live and that Europe was surely drifting toward war. She lived to see her prophecy fulfilled.

Mrs. THOMA retained her mental vigor until a very short time before her death. She was able to read her daily newspapers and thoroughly enjoyed the visits of her friends until a few days before her death.

The deceased is survived by four children, William THOMA of Bernhardt,, Cassie ESHELMAN of Agency, Iowa, Caroline MULLIGAN of Lincoln, Neb., and Anna GOODWIN of Quantico, Va., as well at 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral services wehe (sic - were) held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the home of her son William, conducted by Rev. Father Lawler of St. Mary's Catholic church. Burial was in the McCleary cemetery.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I am not related to the person(s) mentioned.

Note: Mary was also known as Murin. Husband Burnhardt died in 1896 and is also buried in McCleary Cemetery. Her maiden name, as well as her married name, was THOMA.
