He attended schools in Fairfield, Iowa, participating in football and basketball before graduating with the FHS Class of 1958. He jokingly confided after trying out for chorus, his music teacher advised him it would be to his advantage to concentrate on sports rather than any musical endeavors.

Upon graduating high school, Art attended Parsons College where an attractive Parson freshman, Linda MILLER, caught his eye. They married June 16, 1961, at Athol, Mass., Linda's home town. Accepting Art's first teaching contract, the young family, which included son, Geoffrey Arthur, moved to Williamsburg, Iowa. Art taught math and coached junior high school football and basketball. While residing in Williamsburg, the couple welcomed Shelli Lynn and Curtis Arthur into their family.

The family returned five years later where Art accepted a teaching assignment at the Fairfield Middle School, teaching mathematics and coaching tennis, basketball, and football. Art left teaching for a brief period of time to become a Correctional Officer for Southeast Iowa and was elected as a member of the Fairfield Community School Board of Education. His work required a lot of travel as a correctional officer which necessitated, he return to teaching and being at home for his family when Linda was diagnosed with cancer which resulted in her death, Sept. 22, 1976. His last years in education was as a high school Guidance Counselor at FHS, filling that position until his retirement.

Since becoming a member of Fairfield Elks Lodge 1192 at the age of 21, Art was always an enthusiastic and active participant. He progressed through the steps to become Exalted Ruler for the year 1992-93. After 30 years of having taught and coached young people, Art retired. April 1997, he was elected state president of the Iowa Elks and later awarded Iowa State Elk of the Year, 2007-08.

Art and Catherine "Katy" HENDRICKSON HUMMELL married July 1, 1982, at her childhood home in Richland, Iowa. Art and Katy enjoyed many years of traveling together, visiting family and friends. Avid fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs, they were long time season ticket holders of Hawkeyes basketball and football games and traveled to several away games, as well. They were delighted to travel to the Chezch (sic - Czech) Republic and Austria with daughter, Shelli, and husband, David during Art's retirement.
