In Response To: Re: PROBATE RECORDS (Della Schults)

You're welcome, Della et al. :) I had myself forgotten that there's no e-mail contact information at the website (probably no one with time to field all the mail!).

Soooo...rather than dig for my last newsletter, I sent a message (copied below) to the Davis/Wapello Co. Genweb coordinator in hopes that she can forward it to an appropriate someone. So far no reply, but patience is a virtue here. It may be that even the local members are not familiar with the situation; I wouldn't have found out myself except for going to the courthouse in July, and thence to the Society headquarters, asking about the pre-1920 probate files.......

Looking forward to seeing what develops....especially if it helps save these irreplaceable bits of history!

Linda :)

The following is a COPY of my e-mail of today's date, directed to the GenWeb coordinator for Davis & Wapello Counties, through their website:

"Sorry to bother you, but the Wapello County Genealogical Society (of which I've been a member for years) website does NOT appear to have an e-mail link, and someone from that Society needs to speak up about the flap going on at the Wapello County GenWeb board about the 'missing' pre-1920 Wapello County probate records, or all you-know-what is likely to break loose, and soon......

Here's the link to the thread:

http://iagenweb.org/boards/wapello/queries/index.cgi?read=58680

This rather unhappy discussion has been going on for a week or so, so far, and as of yet no one from the Society has chimed in with any sort of information or explanation! Now, that COULD be because some person or persons there have scre*#*+ up terribly and don't want to own up to it, or it could just be a misunderstanding.

The bottom line is that unless there is some reassurance about those probate records from SOMEONE in a position to have reliable information, it sounds like the County Clerk, Board of Supervisors, Ottumwa Courier and etc. are all about to be on the receiving end of a snail mail campaign inquiring as to the status of these 'missing' irreplaceable public records.

Please forward this to the Society, and a reply would be appreciated also.

Thanks in advance -
Linda Shogren"
