PROBATE RECORDS

My friend sent to the courthouse in Ottumwa for probate records of her RANDALL family. They told her that the "Wapello County Genealogical Society" had these and were coping them to microfilm and that they would never be returned to the courthouse. Is this true? I find it hard to think that these rcords wouldn't be available except from the microfilm which will probably end up at the library in Ottumwa. Can somebody tell me exactly what happens to these records and where can I find probate info that is available now?
