Why on earth would Wapello County let people come into the courthouse and just take these records without at least transcribing and copying for researchers? These were property of ours and meant for future generations of Wapello County ancestry to search. If I would have know this was happening; I would have transcribed these records myself and had put into books that are bought by us Genealogists. By so doing so, the Wapello County Genealogical Society would be of help in some way. My friend Verda of Jefferson county Iowa; has transcribed a Probate index for 1839-1890;which lists when the person died and what probate box in the basement of Jefferson County Iowa at Fairfield to look into. Why couldn't we have done this? It makes sense to me. It makes me wonder what will happen to the beautiful ledgers that are in the Clerk's office.
