Wurth served in World War II with the U.S. Army as an ammunitions driver in the battles of North Africa, Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples, Anzio, Rome, southern France and the Rhineland. The last conflict was at Ardennes Alsace.

James Robison “Big Jim" Bowers was born Aug. 23, 1927 to George Emmet and Clara Frances Wathier Bowers. He died Apr. 19, 1951 and is buried in Saint Marys Cemetery, Alton, IA. 

Jim graduated from Saint Marys Academy, Alton in 1945 after which he joined the U.S. Navy. He later received a fleet appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1950. He transferred to the U.S. Air Force to become a pilot and on Apr. 19, 1951, the plane he was piloting crashed near Lubbock, TX and he died while being taken to the hospital by ambulance.
