Well, I don't know if it's too old of an obituary, but I'll ask for Abigail
Major, she died approx Janury 10, 1888. And if you have older than that, John
Rex Major, died May 10, 1857. I know that might be too much of a request,
because here our obituaries only go back to like 1891, but if you could find
something, I sure would appreciate it. Thank you!

My name is Sharon Cole Tutt. I am trying to research my husband's family in
Muscatine, starting with Warren Leslie Tutt. He was born in 1881 and died
3-18-1940 in Muscatine. I do not know who his parents were. His obituary
stated he had brothers: Clint in Gillespie, IL(in 1940) and Clarence G.(in
Chicago in 1940); sisters: Alice Jensen(in 1940 was living in Ambrose, ND)
and Jessie Grimes(living in Eugene,OR in 1940). Warren was married to Lola
Belle "Lottie" Franklin(7-3-1882 to 1-30-1960) and they had two children;
Arthur (Art) Reginald (5-31-1900 to 10-1981) and Ralph(1-8-1902 to
6-22-1996). Art was married three times; first to Katherine Freda Heuer,
they had two sons - Robert (Bob) Arthur and Warren Herbert. Second wife was
Eva M. Smith and they had two daughters, Arlene (now Cooper) and
Marvella(now Keel). Third wife was Lavona "Bonnie" Drawbaugh and they had a
son Wayne and a daughter Mary Ann. Bob was my husband's (Kenneth Warren)
father. I am looking for any information on this family, especially about
who Warren Leslie Tutt's parents were and where they were from. Also looking
for information on Katherine Freda Heuer, her parents were Christ and
Catherine (Dieckman) Heuer of Muscatine.
Thank You.

From: Esther Doyle Read
SARAH, LIDIA ANNA, and JONATHAN OLIVER MARTIN, were siblings. They were the children of JONATHAN MARTIN and LYDIA READ of Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey. All three married and appear to have settled in Muscatine County as adults.
SARAH MARTIN, born circa 1826, married BALTIS KEEN. I have found a Baltis T. Keen died 19 February 1854, age 48, buried in Melpine Cemetery, need confirmation that this is Baltis Keen who married Sarah Martin. Also found reference to a possible child: B. SYLVESTER KEEN, died 23 May 1852, age 1 year, 1 month and 23 days, buried Melpine.
LIDIA ANNA MARTIN, born 11 March 1836 in New Jersey, died 11 September 1898 in Muscantine, Iowa. Married in Warren County, New Jersey in February 1860, BALTIS KEEN WINTERMUTE, son of Charles Wintermute and Magaret Keen. He was born 23 May 1832 and died 4 April 1907. They did not have children. Baltis owned a grocery store and Lidia was a teacher. They are buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Would like information about Baltis's business and the schools were Lidia taught.
JONATHAN OLIVER MARTIN, born between 1836 and 1845 in New Jersey. Married SARAH LUNDY. I have no information about Jonathan and Sarah and would like to know what happened to them after they settled in Iowa. I'm not sure that they settled in Muscantine County, but given that two siblings were already there, it is possible that Jonathan settled near his sisters.
I have additional information about the New Jersey Martins. Please visit my web site: Read Family Connections www.charm.net/~edrtjd/readgen/ The site contains information about many Warren and Sussex County, New Jersey families. Several of their descendants settled in Iowa as well as Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kansas.

Is anyone on this list researching the family of Jacob Schumacher? He
and his wife are buried in Pike twp, Muscatine County. He died at
Fruitland about 1905.
He had been a mystery to our family for years until I followed a remote
clue the other night and found him on the Muscatine GenWeb. The
birthdate and place matched family records. I knew that he had gone to
Iowa but that's all I knew. I noticed that my great uncle Henry, who
would have been his nephew, had had a picture taken in Muscatine, Iowa
and wondered if perhaps he had had it taken when he went to visit his
uncle. The clue paid dividends.
The following is what the family records show on Jacob:

young. No info on Bell.
One cousin believes she was part Blackfoot.

Thanks Dave,
I believe that you meant "Viola Stoker" not Stocker. I just received some
other information from another source. I have a copy of a depostition dated
June 10, 1865 by MARY JANE STOKER, widow of GRITON STOKER, d. May 20, 1865
listing his surviving children as:
HARRISON STOKER, b. July 14, 1853;
VIOLA STOKER, b. April 31, 1854;
ORESIMUS STOKER, b. Dec. 26, 1857;
CAROLINE STOKER, b. Sept. 4, 1859;
GEORGE M (or W) STOKER, b. May 30, 1861;
IDA MAE STOKER, b.Feb. 12, 1863;
EMMA STOKER, b. Dec. 29, 1864.
They apparently held property in the area of Sec. 14, TWP 77 4 W of the
5thPM in Muscatine County. They should show in the Census of the area
between 1853 and 1865.
I have seen her death obituary from Sheridan Wyoming. It only says that
she was born in Iowa and nothing else.
There was something strange about the deposition issued by her mother,
Mary Jane. Her name was crossed out of the list of children to share his
estate.
I hope that you can do something with this information.

Thank you so much for checking records on Joseph Fisher for me. I was hoping
that the marriage information would list more than just date/minister and
have parents and date & place of birth information also. Joseph is such a
mystery.
His other marriage took place in another state (possibly IL) before he left
for the Civil War. When he returned to IL in 1864, he found his first wife,
Lucy, to have been "unfaithful" and he left her and traveled to Iowa where he
married Elizabeth. No luck on tracing his marriage/divorce records in IL so
thought perhaps he didn't divorce her until he was living in IA.
I appreciate you checking on this for me and hope you are able to find
earlier records on divorce somewhere!

___________________________________________________________________
His wife was Mary Overman, and they were from Ohio.
the only son I have for him is Charles Darland, and he died in Nashville, TN
December 27, 1864, so he would have been 18 and was buried there. This
account also appears in the Muscatine Journal Vol X no. 159, pg 3, dated Feb.
4, 1865. I have not found a burial record for Mary, unless of course she
remarried.
I know that there was one other Van Loo Darland, but he was from Kansas and
his nephew. In the 1860 Census for Muscatine-Goshen Twp, only Van LIew,
Mary and Charles age 14 were listed. If they had had a son Van LIew he would
also be listed and age 14.
I know the Ancestry.com Date Base, Iowa Soldiers Burial Records shows him as
buried in the Overman Cemetery.
I think that either time has worn a part of the number 4 making it look like
a 1 thus 18 rather than 48-I don't know what other explination there could be
unless the stone cutter made an error?
I really appreciate your response very much.
Thankyou and Happy Thanksgiving.

At this point I am unable to find any document stating his birthplace in Germany, I have documents on his marriage in1885, his naturalization in 1888 and sometime after that they moved from Rock Island County to Muscatine. I also have an article about his death from the Muscatine Journal. All of these list birthplace only as Germany.
On ancestry.com his name is listed in Muscatine, Iowa Directory 1891-1893. I am not a subsciber to this website and was wondering if you could tell me what it is and what information it may contain.
Thank you rmthomas@netins.net

Hi.... I'm not sure about the Squier family-perhaps they weren't in your
county but the Menter brothers Hiram and Robert were to have been listed in
the 1860 Muscatine census according to another researcher. Perhaps it would
help if others knew they had been in DeKalb Co Il. in 1850. These were sons
of Filena Menter, father still not proven. She had two daughters, Sarah and
Diana who married Squiers, possibly brothers. Diana had been married to
James Graham Kelsey previous to John Squier.

I really don't have much more.
I spoke to a distant cousin that knew him when he was little.....he was
almost 6 when his mother died. He was placed by the state with one family,
but relatives demanded that he be put with them, when it was determined that
the foster family was mistreating him. Russell had a violent temper, speech
problems, and uncontrollable rages. He had difficulty reading/learning.
(It is believed that he may have been dyslexic, as a number of other family
members had that same problem, and there is a high occurance of dyslexia in
the one branch of the family.) After 3 years with the relatives, his rages
and fits became more than they could handle. They asked the State of
Wisconsin to place him elsewhere - but somewhere they could have contact
with.
"Russell" was placed with a "Swiss family" near Sheboygan, WI. The person I
spoke with the cousin (Mary) last night, she remembered going with to drop
him off (she was about 25 yrs old). She remembers that there were "a lot of
brown dairy cows" on the farm. She does not remember seeing any other
children though.
In 1945, the family went to check up on Russell......the family was gone,
Russell was gone, and the neighbors only knew that they moved out of state.
Russell was almost 58, if that is the same one there in IA. The Cook
(maternal) side of his family has a number of health issues, to include :
arteriosclerosis, Cystic Fibrosis, High Blood Pressure, Chronic Rheumatism,
high occurance of Stroke (Cardio-Vascular Accident). Asthma and Allergies
are severe in a number of family members. There is some alcoholic problems
in the Cook family.
For these reasons, I am needing to know the cause of death on the one in
Iowa.

I'm pretty sure my great grandparents' names are William and Celestine
(Celeste) Middleditch or Della Beesett (not sure of spelling, could be
Beessett or Busett). William served in the 44th infantry of Iowa Company B.
I'm not certain if Della is William's mother or his wife. I know his wife's
name is Celeste (or at least one of his wife's, I'm not certain if he had
more than one). My mother says she remembers meeting her grandparents when
she was a little girl and remembers her grandmother being named Celeste).
William is a family name and goes back many generations. My uncle is
William Vernon, my grandfather is William Harrison, and my greatgrandfather
is William Floyd. William Floyd, I believe, was born in Muscatine County
and enlisted as a volunteer in the infantry in Muscatine.
I haven't traced my ancestors back any farther than this. My mom remembers
very little so I have nothing much more than this to go on.
Thank you for your help with my search. I truly appreciate your assistance.

Hi again, Dave
Yes, I would like to have a uncertified copy of the marriage record you
looked up for me: Wm. Moxley and Catharine Ramsey - July 25, 1862 - Record
A, page 88. I think the other records are for his nephew so will not worry
about that at this time. I am also interested in Death or Probate records
for his father who was also a William Moxley born 1803 in England and died
1888, buried in Muscatine Co., IA, according to the Greenwood Cemetery
Records I found on the internet.
As for Catharine Ramsey, am having trouble linking her with the Robert
Ramsey I believe to be her father. In 1860 Census I find a Robert Ramsey
household in Muscatine Co. on P 244: Robert 44, wife Nancy 41, Margaret 11,
Robert 3 and Elizabeth 1. No mention of Catharine who would have been 16
yrs. old. What other records do you have that might help me? After she
married they eventually moved on to Norton Twp., Jefferson Co., KS where I
find them in 1880 Census. This same Robert Ramsey family was also there in
same area at that time. I will have to look there for any death or probate
records. Have a copy of naturalization certificate for Robert Ramsey in
1856, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA stating he was born in Ireland and
nothing more. Catharine was also born in Ireland.

I believe I have found my elusive great-uncle, but need confirmation. I have reason to believe that the SSDI has his birthdate wrong (would not be a first, I assure you). His birthdate on the SSDI is 16 Jul 1928. It is actually 6 Jul 1928. The person I am seeking died in May of 1983.
The Roy Russell Magee I am seeking is the 11th child of Levi Alonzo "Lon" Magee (also appears on other children's birth certificates as Alonzo L Magee or Lon Magee) and Charlotte Adela (Cook) Magee. He was born in White Creek Township, Adams County, WI. Time of birth on birth certificate is 4am. His grandmother, Lillie A (Waterman) Cook attended his birth. Charlotte (Cook) Magee died in June of 1934. At that time, her youngest 6 children were sent to various relatives to live. Roy would have been a few weeks shy of his 6th birthday. None of the surviving siblings know where he ended up, or who he ended up with. If this is indeed the same person, I would like a copy of the death certificate. Thanks very much for your response. Unfortunately, all I know is that she
lived in Muscatine in 1914. She was almost certainly unmarried, and
probably a young woman - late teens or early 20s, so Howell would be a
maiden name. She knew a young man named Loid Bell. It is possible that
she later married him.

Hi Dave,
I am looking for the Rodgers family of children. The father & mother were
Mathew Mark Rodgers & Mary Dowdal Rodgers. Mathew died in 1895, Mary died in
1899. The children at that time of Mary's death were:
Mabel - 15
William Mathew - 14
Charles John - 12
Francis - 10
Mary - 9
Florence - 7
Irene - 5
William Mathew is my line and my grandma said that he was sent to a Catholic
Home and he hated church because the nuns were so mean to the kids. I want
to know where this was and how many of the children were together or
separated. Maybe get records if there are any. The parents are both buried
in St. Mary's ,Wilton.
I thought there might be a separate census because on a mailing list I get
from Ohio, someone said that there was a separate census. I didn't know if
that was localized or generally wide spread method for orphan children.

I am researching the family name MEYER. My ggfather August MEYER was born
February 6, 1866 in Germany (birth place unknown). His father was Carl
MEYER. At the age of 15, August MEYER traveled to America by himself, that
was 1880-1881, it is unknown what port he departed from in Germany and where
he arrived in the USA. He married my ggmother Martha (EIKELMANN) IKELMAN who
lived in Muscatine, Iowa with her stepmother Katherine Elizabeth
STROKER-EIKELMAN (IKELMAN) RIECKE (RIECK-RIEKE). Martha and August married
November 10, 1891 in Denver, Colorado, where one of Martha's brothers lived.
They lived in Denver for 5 years, then moved to Muscatine, Iowa where their
two children were born, their names were Carl Henry MEYER and Gertrude
Lillian MEYER. They lived in Muscatine for 2 years, according to family
history I have, August worked at the Button Co, then moved to Davenport, Iowa
where they remained. August was a Davenport Policeman and Martha a
homemaker. I haven't been able to find out where August MEYER lived for the
first ten years after he arrived in the USA. I checked the Naturalization
records in Muscatine, Iowa and there was a A. MEYER who was naturalized, but
I can't confirm that it was him. It is just a guess on my part but maybe
August and Martha met in Muscatine , Iowa. Martha (EIKELMAN) IKELMAN was
born in Ueckendorf, Germany and was of the Catholic Faith. August had no
Church affiliation. I have been researching for many years and have not been
able to solve the August MEYER mystery. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated as what to do next. Thank you, Marcia Meyer Strieck

I do not know the connection of Joseph Farrell to John and Mary. Mary is
buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Wilton. I have been unable to find out what
happened to John Francis Farrell.
The Edge family I am looking at lived in Wilton and are listed in the 1910
census. Jasper N. Edge was married to Maude with two children listed. Donald
D., and Glenada B.. Also living with them was Jaspers brother William.
William served in the Civil War in Co. I, 46th. Regiment from Iowa as a
private. Donalds occupation was listed as "odd jobs" and Glenada was listed
as a teacher. Apparently Maude was Jaspers second wife. His first wife was
Anna and they had three children Lewis, Hallie and Francis. Jasper and Anna
lived in Jasper County Iowa in 1880.
I have adoption papers from 1909 for my father that lists his mother as
Lilly Edge (Farrell) and the father as Donald Edge.
I have found nothing on Donald Edge after the adoption and traced Lilly
(Lillian) to Rock Island Il. where she is listed as married to Earl MaHaffey
the owner of a Barber & Pool Hall. After 1923 there is no longer any
listings.
I am currently trying to find any ancestors of Donald Edge & Lillian Farrell

Wolterman, President of the Ida County Historical Society, has been helping us

building and library. She is interested also in whatever you can find, and I
have sent her copies of whatever I'm getting from Muscatine county. That
biography of William and his father Rev. William just opened up the whole thing
for us back to Sligo, Ireland, and Denise wrote that she had visited the area,
most interesting. So you might want to make a note somewhere that there is
Johnston information in Ida Grove (including son's Sylvanus and Edmund- also
brothers of Hadasah). Haven't any idea who Asa Johnston is, first time I have
heard that name. That would be interesting as well. If there is anything on
the Wm and Louisa Johnston family that you would like, that I may have, please

Dear Dave,
Thank you so much for your efforts on your wonderful website. I just found
my G,G,G,G Grandfather Sovereign H. Brown and his second wife. How
exciting! Lydia Brown was apparently the wife of Sovereign's son Edwin.
That's a new find as well. I have only been researching my genealogy since
last Oct. I was wondering what WPA records are. I am guessing they are
burial records? I would love to have a copy of them if possible.
I was wondering if there is any possibilities of you taking photos of the
Brown graves for me. I would be glad to pay you for doing this. I live in
Ohio and it would be pretty difficult for me to run by the cemetery today.
:o)
I just learned a new hint to help you read tombstones as well. Take a can
of cheap shaving creme and spread over the words on the tombstone. Then
wipe it down with something straight like the edge of a folder or plastic
ruler. I understand it makes the hard to read stones much more legible.
Please let me know if you can take photos for me and send a copy of the WPA
records. I would truly appreciate any help. Again, thanks so much for
posting the info for the cemetery. I may of never know where he was buried
otherwise.
If you need any research done in the Ohio area I will be glad to look in my
genealogy library for you. I have a pretty good one in Xenia, Ohio. The
best of the ones I have seen so far.

I am looking for information on the family of Katherine SCHMELZER WINTERMEYER (1857-1935). She emigrated to the United States from Hessen (Germany) in about 1881. She landed in Muscatine County, IA where she married Henry WINTERMEYER (1861-1936) in the Evangelical Lutheran church. They lived in the city of Muscatine until about 1904 or so, then moved to California. They lived in Pittsburgh, Contra Costa county, CA until their respective deaths. Records state that Katherine's parents were Johan Shmelzer and Elizabeth Becker, but I have no dates for them.
In the 1900 federal census, the WINTERMEYER's are found in enumeration district 105 on sheet 11A in Mucatine City. On page 11B there is the family of Henry SCHMELZER, born March 1867, aged 33 years, married 12 years to Mary J. SCHMELZER, born Jan 1870. They had 6 children born to them and 6 were living. Henry was stated to be born in Iowa, but his parents were born in Germany. His wife was born in Germany. Henry was a saloon keeper. Their children are listed as well. My hope is that Henry was some sort of relative to Katherine and that someone who is descended from Henry will contact me. I would like to find the town in Germany where Katherine was born.
In addition, a Lizzie SCHMELZER was listed as a witness to the WINTERMEYER'S marriage in 1884. I have not been able to identify her with any local family.
Thanks.

David, would you be able to find the obituaries of William and Louisa (Holmes) Johnston? They are both buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Wilton and were residing there when they died, William d: 9/4/1898 Louisa d: 1/30/1908. These are my ggGrandparents. Back in April you were kind enough to send me the biographies of William and his father Rev. William and am now hoping to get some family background on ggGrandmother Louisa. Another question, are the authors of the biographies named, in the the Muscatine County History - 1889? If so, who was the author of the William Johnston biographies? Was it Mrs. Perry, a daughter of William and Louisa that also lived in Wilton?

You suggested writing to Greenwood Cemetery, but didn't give an address. I'm
planning on visiting there next month and would like to photograph family
gravestones, but with a cemetery that size, I'll need locations, as well as
the location of the cemetery. Is there an office at the cemetery, and what
hours does it have.
Thanks for all you've done.

Dave,
We exchanged messages last year regarding the Terry family members buried in
Wilton/Oakdale Cemetery.
>From old maps, I believe my ancestor (Isaac K. Terry) lived one-mile directly
east of Wilton. From the county history volume, I believe he bred trotters
(standardbred race horses) in the 1860-1890 time frame.
Wondered whether you knew of any old race tracks in the Wilton area (or
elsewhere in Muscatine County? I doubt any tracks still exist, but would be
interested in any leads on their former location.
>From what I've read in the sporting journals, Muscatine was one of the
greatest trotting horse towns west of the Mississippi, so I assume there were
some race tracks during that time-period (but don't know where). The tracks
could have been either turf or dirt, and either oval or kite (tear-drop)
shaped.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions for further research. I'll be
visiting Wilton/Muscatine this Friday and Saturday, and hope to do some
research on the Terry family and local harness racing.
Many thanks.

Heinrich Frederick Schmelzer and Martha Elizabeth (Hocke) Schmelzer.
I am particularly interested in trying to find anything on the Hocke family. The father's name was Herrmann, wife Elisabeth and children, Anna, Elisabeth, Andreas, Martha, Johann, Heinrick, Ludwig and Elise. I believe that they came to America on the Anna from Bremen, Germany and which docked in New York on 22 June 1850.
Heinrich died in Muscatine on 6 June 1876 and Martha on 26 August 1876. They are buried in Greenwood Cemetery. I have always wondered if maybe there was a flu epidemic, or something of that nature that killed them both so close together.

Dave,
You helped me find the marriage information on Laura DeWitt and Milton J. Adams in Muscatine Co. earlier this summer. In addition you provided me with the names of their parents. I had found very little on any of these people until the other day when I was able to locate the marriage date for Urias DeWitt and Margaret A.Campbell (Laura's parents). It appears they were married 29 Nov 1855 in Muscatine Co. I am hoping that perhaps their record will include their parent's names or perhaps a birthplace. I have not found either of them in an 1850 census. My guess is that they may have been among the many who arrived following the train expansion. Thanks again for your help. June Huggins

Dave,
Some months ago you helped me look up my great2 grandparents marriage that took place in Muscatine, IA. I can't tell you how gratifying it was to finally see that these people did exist. This side of the family has proved very difficult and throughly undocumented. Because my grandfather was an only child who died very young, a divorce in the 1930's between my grandparents and my grandmother's subsequent return to the South I have never had any contact with these families. There is no surviving memory among my father and his siblings of any of these people. ( It was exciting to hear my father recall "Oh yes! I do remember the name DeWitt", after I forwarded to him your email. He now recalls attending a funeral for someone that was named DeWitt when he was a very small boy living in Chicago. All he remembers is a very long drive and standing in the rain. At least it was something.)
You were also able to provide me with the bride and groom's parent's names. Milton Josiah Adams married Laura DeWitt 18 Aug 1886. Their parents names were Jonathan and Evaline (Petit) Adams and Urius and Margaret (Campbell) DeWitt. I have had no luck in tracing any of these people. (I did find a cemetary record for a Jonathan Adams at Greenwood Cemetary, but no other record to indicate if this is the correct Jonathan though the dates of his life would work). I am wondering if any of these people appear on an IA 1880 census? Do you have a local library that is willing to do these sort of lookups?
Sorry for rambling. Thank you so much for all of your help. June Huggins

I was wondering if you have the resources to check on a marriage for me.
In Oakridge cemetery there is a strange plot with a huge stone on which is
engraved "Heston - Wiese." Frank and Ella Heston are buried there as is

Wiese labelled "Husband." Husband of whom? I am wondering if he might

I found a death date for William D. Bennett on Ancestry. Then about two weeks ago, whoever admitted the file, decided to remove it from the website. I had copied some of the file, but not the url of the submitter. So, I don't have a clue who put it in there or if the information is correct.
William D. Bennett was born in 1874 in Missouri. He died 9 Oct. 1930 in Muscatine.
I have Lieuzetta's obituary, but would like the obits of:
William D. Bennett d. 9 Oct. 1930 Muscatine
Otho E. Bennett d. Mar. 21, 1976 Iowa City, Iowa
Anthony Sling d. May 19, 1958
If Otho's obit is not in the Muscatine paper, don't bother with it. I realize that William may not have an obit, considering the year and how important a person is. If they die in the poorhouse, sometimes they don't have an obit.
I thank you for all your help and if you need money for your work, let me know.

This is an update on the query that I submitted on Dec. 5, 2000.
Thanks to a lot of research done by Pam Schnittjer, West Liberty
Public Library Volunteer, who spent many hours going through the West
Liberty Index files for me, I now know most of the story. I have also
met via e-mail a descendant of Caroline R. Hitchcock and Clark
Hitchcock., who shared a lot of information about her.
Caroline R. Hitchcock, the widow of Clark Hitchcock, had 6 children
from that marriage when she married George W. Deming in 1893. Some of
those children stayed in New London, IA, some lived with her in West
Liberty.
Caroline R. Deming was in the hospital in Iowa City in March of 1896
and remained there until at least March 26, 1896. However, she survived
the illness that may have contributed to the suicide of George W.
Deming. Caroline Deming inherited the farm of George W. Deming in
1896.
From the West Liberty Index, April 23, 1896: "E.H. Hitchcock moved
Tuesday from his mother's (the Deming) place to his new home in New
London, Iowa." (Edmund Horton Hitchcock was a son Carrie's.)
From the West Liberty Index, Mar. 4, 1897: "E.H. Hitchcock's stock
and machinery, from New London, Iowa, is being unloaded today and taken
back to the old Deming or Will Miller place, two miles west. The
Messrs. Siders, former occupants of the farm, have moved onto the Hogue
place north of town."
An 1899 plat map of Wapsinonoc Township shows Carrie Deming as the
owner of about 118 acres 2 Mi. west of West Liberty. Wm. H. Deming is
located on 164 acres 1 mi. west of her property and on the N. side of
the road. Lura and Charles Deming had about 110 acres 2 miles south of
West Liberty.
Caroline Deming remained on the farm with her sons until 1904 when
she sold the farm and with two sons, John and Clark and daughter, Mary,
went to Berkley, Calif. In 1906, she with Clark & Mary went to Kansas
City where her son Edmund had already relocated. She died there the
following year. (1907)
When my wife and I visited Muscatine County in May 2001, Pam took us
on a GRAND tour of the various properties owned by these ancestors. I
really appreciated that.
FYI: The information about Caroline's children and where she went after
selling the farm, came from Ronnie Lee (Scovel) Brothers

your information, they are Clarence's mother, father and infant son.
Finally, I noticed a Matilda Wilson, for whom plot records are available.
John W.'s mother was named Matilda, but its my understanding that she died
in Indiana. In any case, I would be interested in whatever you have on her.
Thanks very much.

Thank you for your fast response.
To the best of my knowledge Enoch Weller never set foot in Muscatine.
According to the 1860 census for Sandusky OH, he was born in New York in
about 1828, if my suspicions are correct in Schenectady. He worked in the
Sheriffs' Office in 1860. On 20 May 1852 he married in Champaign Co. an
Eliza Rebecca Austin, dau. of Amos (a physician) and Rachel Austin, who bore
him three daus. : Amy Amelia, b. 25 Feb 1854; Emma Elizabeth, b. 5 Mar 1856;
and Carrie C. b. 23 Aug 1859. All were born in Sandusky.
Enoch served in the OVI from 1861 until he was killed on 2 Jan 1863.
Following his death, his widow Eliza spent 20 years before being granted a
full pension, and it is the record of her persistence (20 documents in the
National Archives) that yielded almost all the details of the family.
Carrie Hunter was one of two witnesses to Eliza's final claim against the War
Dept. and both she and Eliza gave their adresses as PO Box 403 Muscatine.
Eliza finally won her case for a pension worthy of her husband's sacrifice.
Eliza's died on 9 July1907 apparently also in Muscatine, as no new address is
given in the Notification.
I suspect Enoch was the son of a William and Sarah Weller, a pioneer family
that helped settle Lima OH, migrating through Sandusky, down to Bucyrus, and
then across through Indian country to Lima. William died prematurely, and
Sarah moved also to Champaign Co., where she died. These facts, which have
emerged as my research has progressed are among those that make me suspect
Enoch's origins. Another is that Enoch is a traditional first name in this
Weller family, surviving as such down to the present; and Enoch of Sandusky
was of the age to have been one of William's missing sons.
It appears from the documentation that Eliza was living with her father in
Rockford, Winnebago Co. Il in June 1873, but sometime between then and 27 Oct
1886 she moved to Muscatine. She made a declaration before a notary on that
date that she was a resident of Muscatine Co., witnessed by Mrs. Carrie
Hunter, and an Alice B. Whicher.
I am afraid that is about as much as I can tell you. I am sure many people
would make the link without even questioning its validity, but I am not that
kind of researcher.
Again, very many thanks for your interest.
Regards,
Ray Walker

Dave:
I am trying to make contact with descendants of a Carrie (Caroline?)
Clementine Hunter, born Carrie Weller , 23 AUG 1859, Sandusky OH; who was
living in Muscatine with her mother Eliza Weller on 27 OCT 1886. Eliza died
in Muscatine in 1907, if pensioner records in the National Archives are
correct.
Eliza was the widow of a GAR Major Enoch Weller, killed at the Battle of
Stones River TN.
My objective is to identify the parents of Enoch.
If my suspicions are correct, and I can make the appropriate identification,
I can make available an extensive family history of the Weller family to any
interested descendants I can find.
Do you have any suggestions as to local sources that might help me locate a
knowledgable descendant?
I hope that is not too much trouble to impose on you.
Sincerely,
Ray Walker

There is a cemetery on RT 38 where my great great grandfather, John Munn is buried along with his 3rd wife, Phebe and a grand daughter. The cemetery is small and I have been told that at one time there was a church with this cemetery. The name is the Hebron Cemetery. John Munn died February 10, 1897. I was hoping to locate what happened to the records of the people who are buried there and or any info on the church records. Thanks,

My name is Sally Flory-O'Neil. My g-g-grandmother was Martha Timberlake who married John Heller. I am attempting to determine what relationship, if any Frank L. Martha is buried in the Greenwood Cem. in Muscatine, while her father and mother, John and Amy Timberlake are buried in the TImberlake Cem. in Atalissa.
Any lookup(s) you could do in this regard would be greatly appreciated.
