I just got some information showing that the Skolnik and Bloom familys are buried in the B'Nai Moses Cemetery which you now say is the Gilbert Jewish Cemetery. I looked up the people you have listed but none of my family are there.Have you listed all the people that are buried there or is it just a partial list? Also is their anyone there I could contact either by phone or mail? My greatgrandmother Fannie Skolnik Born 1834 died July 4th 1924 and Willie Bloom at least I think his first name was Willie. He was only 2yrs old and I think he was born in 1901 and died either 1902 or 1903. If you could take a picture of their graves. Thanks Gerry

I am researching my Brown's and Douglas lines in Muscatine, I have no idea where they are buried (which cemetery). I know they wouldn't be buried in the Catholic cem. as they were all Episcopalians. Here are the names: Mathew J. DOUGLAS b. 1829 in Ireland died: Muscatine? Anne E. DOUGLAS died: July 14, 1866 Muscatine, IO (?) John BROWN died: May 24, 1872 Muscatine, IO Thomas M or N BROWN died December 23, 1893 Muscatine, IO (T.N [or M] Brown was the county superintendent] I found Mathew J. and Anne E. DOUGLAS on the 1860 Muscatine Census [Muscatine City] I have no idea what happened to them. I have no inf. on them, other than what I found on the census. I believe, but can not prove that they both died in Muscatine. Anne's date of death comes from a family bible, I don't know if it is correct. The information on the BROWN's comes from my cousins in Ireland who are also interested in copies of the cemetery records (which I would copy and send to them).

It sounds like you have a lot of books to go through! Please do not go to the trouble to find these names if your records are not indexed in alphabetical order! If they are indexed, please let me know what you charge for copies (and your time) Again, Thank You! Best Regards, Sandy

My only clue was what I took off Lucinda V (PORTER) Stevenson Kelck of Rockwell, Iowas DAR application for membership that I received yesterday.. I guess back in 1921 they didn't have to give information on the birth place and place of death of any of the line she followed. Written on the top of her DAR application Mason Cty chapter. Deceased 1-14-1933. Her line was. Johnathan John Spicer B-1753 D-1888 M-Catherine Elizabeth Spicer B-13 Mar 1786 D-13 Apr 1876 M-1806 James Porter B-17 Apr 1784 D-11 Jan 1832 Matthew Porter B-9 Mar 1817 D-30 Aug 1894 M-Sarah P. Tudor. Daughter Lucinda V who was the one who is on the DAR application. She has on the application that "she was born on a farm Muscatine, Iowa"... Thought parent Matthew and Sarah Tudor could be bured in that county. I have searched for years (with other Porters) trying to find Matthew Porter B- 1782 M to Jane Spicer. Felt this was a clue if I could get some information on James Porter would help me find for sure where Matthew and James parents were from. Am I on the right track on my thinking?? Searching for Matthew PORTER B-9 Mar 1817 D-30 Aug 1894 and his wife Sarah P. TUDOR B-13 Jan 1834 D-17 Mar 1900. Had a daughter, Lucinda Stevenson Kelck (was a DAR member in Mason City, Iowa). On her DAR application she has born "on a farm" Muscatine, Iowa. Would like to find the obituary of her parents in hopes it will tell about the father of Matthew PORTER (James PORTER B-1784 D-1832 M-Elizabeth Spicer).

I subscribe to this list but have never had a question until now. My ggrandmother is buried in what is called the Patterson Cemetery. Her name is Elizabeth Hewitt (wife of Ephraim Hewitt). Everywhere I search for these people I find Pattersons. It dawned on me that maybe there is a connection between the people that are buried in that small area. Elizabeth was the first one to be buried there and the others followed. Ephraim left Muscatine county with his family between 1858 and 1860 and went to Missouri. Does anyone know of any connection between the Pattersons, Boyers, and Toles and maybe Hewitts? Is this cemetery on a private farm? Can anyone tell if they were neighbors? My Hewitts bought 40 acres of farm ground from a Williamson and Katherine Daniels 24 April 1846 for $220. The legal discription is: S/W quarter of North/E quarter of section 5 in township No#77 North of Range No#1 East. Is this 40 acres anywhere near the Patterson Cemetery? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Judy Barrett

HI!! I WAS 4 DAYS OLD WHEN I WAS ADOPTED. I WAS TOLD SHE MAY HAVE HAD 2OR 3 OTHER CHILDEREN FROM HER FIRST MARRIAGE. THE THIRD PARTY INVOLVED WAS SOMEONE SHE HAD AN AFFAIR WITH AND DID NOT WANT TO DISCLOSE INFORMATION ABOUT THE BIOLOGICAL FATHER BECAUSE THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A SCANDAL AND HE HAD SOME IMPORTANT POSITION IN BUSINESS OR OF THAT SORT. I FOUND THIS TO BE INTERESTING. THE DOCTOR THAT DELIVERED WAS DR. WM. HULL D.O. HE DELIVERED IN A BRICK HOUSE ON EASTERN AND FARNUM [ON THE CORNER] HE HAD AN OFFICE IN THE OTHER PART OF THE HOUSE AND I'M NOT SURE HE LIVED THERE. HIS WIFE WAS AN R.N. THEN AND HELPED HIM. I WANTED TO FIND OUT IF HE HAD ANY RECORDS BUT HE HAD AN OFFICE FIRE ONE YEAR AND HIS RECORDS WERE BURNED, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS QUITE CONVENIENT. I WENT TO BLUE GRASS, IOWA AND TALKED TO HIS WIFE, WHO SEEMED QUITE COLD TOWARDS ME, BUT THEN SHE DID N'T KNOW WHO I WAS AND MY INTENT. THIS WAS SEVERAL YEARS AGO WHEN HE MOVED HIS OFFICE THERE. HE IS KNOW LONGER THERE. I BELIEVE HE RETIRED AND RELOCATED. I DIDN'T WANT TO BOTHER HIM THEN, BECAUSE HE WAS SEEING PATIENTS AND I GOT COLD FEET. BUT NOW AM WANTING TO PERSUE IT AGAIN. I FEEL SHE MAY BE DECEASED BY THIS TIME, BUT I WOULD STILL HAVE 1/2 BROTHERS OR SISTERS.

Figure if I find he was divorced then can search for second wife's marriage record. If you should run into anything that suggests who his parents were and/or siblings it sure would be helpful. Wow this stuff is like finding a needle in a haystack. Am fairly new at this and sure have been in a learning curve. Thank you Pat Heincy El Paso, Tx

It states that his great grandfather emigrated from England and settled in Canaan after the Revolution. In the old settlers record Major W. Gordon is listed as arriving to the county in 1836.From the book: A History of Scott Co.,Iowa he is also listed as being part owner with others of Davenport Iowa.He was said to be a surveyor & worked for the America Fur Trading Co. He is listed in census of Muscantine Co. Iowa where he had business interest with Benjamen Nye. Are there any records of his land in Muscantine Co.,Iowa? Is there any probate or will records? I can't seem to find any info concerning his children. It was said in the family record that he was married to Jane of Philadelphia and that after he disappeared in the Rocky Mts. on a fur trading expedition that his wife sold the land & moved back to Hickman Co.,Tn. where his family lived.I thought if he had a will or there was probate the wife & children might be listed. His Mother did not list any children of his in her will which I think is strange since he must have had several children by the time of his disappearance. Thanks for any help you can give me. From: John Michael O`Melia
Austin and Michael O`MELIA arrived into Muscatine Co IA around 1853. Michael is single and younger than Austin.

Austin is married and with six children for the 1860 federal census. Michael enters service in the 35th Iowa Infantry. There is no record that Austin saw service.

During the month of JAN 1865 Michael gets leave from the military hospital in Memphis, TN to IA and the paper trail states the leave was for 14 days. We feel that Austin had died late DEC 1864 or in early JAN 1865. No proof. But, Austin is accounted for in 1860 and is missing in 1870.

In fact, his wife is married to Thomas CARROLL in 1870. All of the children are dispersed and working and living with other families. In fact, one of the daughters is listed as a domestic in two seperate households.

Austin`s brother, Michael has returned from the war and is married. We have to remember that Austin, Mary, Thomas, and Michael are all born in IRL.

Looking for death and burial information on Austin. It may be possible that there are no markers nor a grave in Muscatine city, Muscatine Co IA.

There may be church records of a funeral. There were O`MELIA living in Muscatine Co IA as late as 15 MAY 1995. 142 years of good heart.

I have searched your page on Muscatine County with a fine tooth comb. You have a wonderful page and I found my gggrandmother's cemetery record in the Patterson Cemetery. I also have searched many films from your area at the Family History Center close to my home. I am coming up with nothing. I wouldn't even have known my family was involved with Iowa had it not been for Civil War records that produced a marriage certificate in Scott county for my ggrandparents. I find some of them living in Muscatine County in 1850. By 1860 they are in Missouri and from there I am having no problems. My biggest problem is the Hardman\Hartman family. On the Scott county marriage certificate Thomas Hewitt marries Charlotte Hardman in Sept 1855. He is the son of Ephriam and Elisabeth Hewitt listed in the 1850 Muscatine Census. Charlotte Hardman should show up on the 1850 census somewhere but I can't find anything on her. I have looked in all the surrounding counties 1850 census in Iowa even going into Rock Island County Illinois. What I know about Charlotte Hardman. My father said her name was Hartman and she was German. I have proved that she was born in Hamburg, (free City) Germany in Feb 1837. I have no parents or siblings names. She sailed on a ship for three months from Germany to America when she was 6 years old. She told my father this. That would make the journey in 1842\43. 1900 Census says 1842. I have not looked at many immigration records yet. That is my next project.

In your lookups could you scan and see if anything says a Charlotte Hardman\Hartman lives in the area. Georgia MCClure looked up John Hardman family in Muscatine but they are way too late for my family. Is there any orphan records that might say she was orphaned and living with someone else? Thank you for your help and great page, Judy Barrett

From: Katharine H. Wilder
Hello: I'm new to this list and hoping someone can fill in some blanks. I'm especially imterested in the MILLHOUSE line. Thanks, Kay Wilder Researching HUDSON-MILLHOUSE-HINDS-TEMPERLEY-THOMBS in the Midwest.

Rev. John Hudson was born 1800 in Lexington, KY. He married Elizabeth Allen BELL in 1823. He was one of the early pioneer preachers of Muscatine County, arriving about 1847. His parents were Joseph and Sarah (WELCH) Hudson. We have nothing further on them.

Rev. Hudson had two daughters who married MILLHOUSES: Mary B. m. Nicholas MILLHOUSE of Keota, IA Sally m. (1867 in Muscatine)Charles H. MILLHOUSE also of Keota All we know about Charles H. MILLHOUSE is that he was born in 1830, where? Parents? Was Nicholas a brother or cousin? Did these two meet the Hudsons while living/working in Muscatine?

Charles H. and Sally had a son, Charles Lewis MILLHOUSE b. 18 July 1870, in Tipton; moved to Keota as a boy. We know much of this man's professional career, but little of his early life. We know nothing of Nicholas. Rev. Hudson was living in Keota in 1889 at age 88, which would seem to suggest that he had gone to be nearer at least one of his daughters. We know Charles L. was in South Bend, IN by 1897.

Any information, or possible source leads, on the MILLHOUSE-HUDSON line will be greatly appreciated.

I have been researching our Great Aunt X 3 since 1985 and finally located her in Iowa in 1990 through her brother's obit. I have a copy of her death certificate (she died 19 March 1925 Des Moines, Polk Co. IA at her son's home) and a copy of her obit from the Muscatine Journal, Sat. March 21, 1925, page 5). I have tried to "find" her in Muscatine Co. for over 8 years with no luck. Her obit is the reason I kept looking in Muscatine Co. for her and her family. It states she was a "Pioneer of Wilton" and for 57 years was a resident of Wilton & vicinity. She, her husband, and a married daughter are buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton, IA.

I have finally learned, with the help of your marriage records online and what few IA census records that are available in OH, she lived in Cedar Co. not Muscatine, at least until 1880. I have her census records for 1870 and 1880 - Farmington Twp. Cedar Co. IA. These are the only IA census records available for research in OH.

Also need lookup for 1910 and 1920 census records and cemetery inscription records in Polk Co. IA. Please advise - Thanx, Carol Walters Canton, Ohio

I am looking for any information on a Barkhurst family living in Atalissa in the 1860's. They had a daughter Phebe who married my ancestor Manford Mott. They were married on Mar 24, 1861. Manford and Phebe spent time in IA and IL before moving to Kearney, Buffalo Co., NE.

They were the parents of Manford, JR, (Matt) Charles, Narsissa, Ella and Roy. They had 2 other children that died byt I have not been able to find out when or where.

Does anyone know who Phebe's parents or where or if she had any sibblings. Would love to correspond with anyone researching this family. Debbie

I am researching the Charles Giles ANGEL family of Muscatine county. They came from Allegany Co.,NY and are on the 1850, 1854 and 1856 census. Charles and wife Eleanor Catherine Angel sold their land in 1876 and moved to Neosho Co., KS. Charles Giles Angel's parents are William and Elizabeth Angel. William and Elizabeth are listed on the 1854 and 1856 Muscatine Co. census. On records in the County Clerk's Office in Cooperstown, Otsego Co.,NY( from notes of a genealogist) --106:59 8 Jan 1855. William Angel of the State of Iowa, Elias Babcock and Sarah, his wife, of Champion, Jefferson Co.,NY and Fernando C. Angel of Exeter, Otsego Co.,NY to Joshua Angel of Exeter, for $750, land in Exeter, part of Lot 13, Schuler's Patent, beg. at SEC cor of lands formerly owned by Caleb Angel-60 acres. William Angel signed from Muscatine County, Iowa. And this document was "sealed and delivered in the presence of Seth Phillips (Justice of the Peace) for Fernando C. Angel". Would there be any more information in Muscatine county records? Is there a death record for either William or Elizabeth Angel? Also, I believe that the Fernando C. Angel listed on the 1856 Muscatine census and who died in Muscatine Co., Iowa 24 Dec 1861 is related to William and Charles of Muscatine and Fernando of NY. I cannot get the Otsego Co. land records from Otsego Co.,NY. The LDS has filmed them but they are not released to the family history centers. Thank you for any information on William Angel. I neglected to give the information that William was born 1799 in NY. Doris Linehan, of Wichita, Kansas

for a copy of the family records from the Bible of Philip Fishburn (Fischborn), b. 1754, Dauphin County, PA. I've got a copy of one page of births, but would like to find the other pages if they are available. The Bible was reported to be in the possession of John C. Fishburn of Muscatine in 1985. There don't appear to be any other Fishburns in the phone book for Muscatine, but there are some in other towns nearby.

Looking for information on Ferdinand Kaufmann who built cigar store in Muscatine. Who were his parents? Who did his son Ferdinand marry? Who did son William marry? My ggf Adolph married Emalie Schmidt dau of John Schmidt. Who was her mother? brothers? sisters? Ferdinand and wife Matilda Rehbien are buried in Muscatine as are Adolph and wife Emalie. Who is Minnie Rehbein Schwab on Kaufmann headstone? I have obits for both Ferdinand and Adolph. Information on their families would be greatly appreciated. Also interested on McElravy line.

Ferdinand probably moved to Muscatine about 1853/54 after his son Adolph was born in St. Louis, MO. He married in 1851 in St Louis, MO. The rest of his children were born in Muscatine. He is buried in Muscatine. Adolph and Emalie married in Muscatine on 11 APR 1882. Emalie was born abt 1858 in Germany per census. Her father is John Schmidt per her marriage record. Don't know her mother is. Ferdinand's wife was Matilda Rehbein. I don't know much about son Ferdinand. I think William was married to Caroline "Carrie" Weisner. Will and Carrie lived in Detroit MI when her sister died in 1926. Carries father was Conrad H Weisner. He is buried in Ottawa, IL. Will and Carrie may have lived in Chicago as well. Hope this helps. I am working on William Gordon b. 1798( md. Jane of Philadelphia.) from Muscatine Co. Iowa. He is sometimes listed as Major Gordon. He was a surveyor & also worked for the American Fur Trading Co. He disappeared in the Rocky Mts. ab. 1848. The men on the expedition said he was killed by Indians. He was in business also with Benjamen Nye. He & some others owned land together where Davenport now stands. He came from Hickman Co. Tn. the son of John Gordon & Doreatha Cross Gordon. he was born in Nashville. I ran across a book about Scott Co. & info was in it about Muscatine Co. Major William Gordon & Benjamen Nye. I think the name of the book was : A History of Scott County. It was old & very informative. It was in the Independence, Mo. public library down the street fom the Truman Library. It also had a history of Davenport Iowa listing first child born, etc. I would like to know if Major Gordon on your 1840 census had any males or females in his family & what age groups they were in. I am hoping that you might be able to help me. Here is a brief background of my query. I am searching for Mary Agnes Kane who was born in Iowa about 1850/1, married in Chicago in 1869, and died Dec 28, 1878 in Malta Twsp., DeKalb Co. Illinois. (according to her husband's pension records). However no record of her death exits in DeKalb Co.

I found 5 possible Kane families on the AIS Search 7. I am in the process of checking each family for a daughter named Mary. I checked the John Kane family first as Mary's second son was named John Wilks Scheers. I found the John (M. or W.) Kane family living in Seventy-six Township on the 1856 state census. He has a daughter named Mary age 6. However this Mary does not appear with the family on the 1860 federal census. Instead there appears to be twins named Mary & Elizabeth who are listed as age 7/12. Could you check the cemetery records and the county records for the death of Mary between the years 1856 & 1860. I want to establish if I am on the wrong trail before I start to check the other four Kane families.

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the GENWEB sites. The lookups provided make long distance research so much easier. Please keep up the good work. Thank you. Debby Was Grande Prairie, Alberta debbyw@telusplanet.net

I am trying to find info on when my ggg grandfather Thomas Fitzsimmons died and were he is buried. He is listed on the 1850 Fed census as a laborer, I don't have which twnshp that they were in. Thomas's wifes name was either Ellen (on the 1850 census) or Elizabeth (on the 1860 census). She was living with her son George and his family on that census, also living there was another son William and Edward Fry (a nephew I believe). George was living in Bloomington twnshp on the 1860 census. Thomas and Elizabeth's other children were John born about 1827, Eliza Jane b. 4-Nov-1835, and Thomas born about 1837. I would also like to know when Elizabeth(Ellen) died, she was born about 1805 in Toome, Longford Co, Ireland. Thomas Sr. was born about 1800 in Ireland. I would possibly be interested in transcribing records onto the computer for the Oakridge Cemetery in West Liberty if there are any paper records available for that cemetery. If these records are available let me know. Thanks, Paul Rekow

Subject: Hollenbeck/Webb

From: Sharon Welch
I am looking for information on my ancestors, Isaac & Abigail WEBB HOLLENBECK who moved to Iowa about 1863 "to a farm near Palo". About a year later, they moved to "the vicinity of Nichols where the family home was established". Isaac and Abigail had four children that I am aware of; Nancy Elizabeth (Blair) (1855-1936), Andrew Jackson (1859-1922), Peter, and a younger son (name unknown).

Nancy Elizabeth HOLLENBECK married John Wallace BLAIR, son of Charles BLAIR & ?, about 1877. I think they were probably married in Iowa but I haven't found their marriage records yet. They had nine children; Herb, Gertie, May U., William W., George Robert, Maude D., Schuyler Martin, Edith E., and Ida M. I don't have any information on Herb or Gertie but their third child, May U., was born 28 Dec 1881 in Guthrie Center, IA, so I'm assuming Nancy moved to Iowa with her father in 1863, married in Iowa about 1877, and remained there through the birth of their third child in 1881. According to family records, their fourth son, William W. was born in South Dakota about 1884 so Nancy and John were gone from Iowa by 1884. They were in South Dakota only a short time before they moved to Nebraska where their fifth child, George Robert (my great grandfather), was born in 1885. They later moved to Boulder, Colorado where they lived the remainder of their lives.

Andrew married Sylvia Florence IDLE, born about 1866 in Iowa to Irvin & Susan Lee IDLE, on 14 March 1882 in Cone, Muscatine, IA. They lived in Cone and Nichols, IA, until about 1891 when they moved to Cedar Rapids, South Dakota. Andrew was killed in a railroad accident while operating an engine in Watertown, South Dakota in 1922.

Peter was living in Kansas City, Kansas, at the time of Andrew's death in 1922.

I have located the death certificate for Isaac HOLLENBECK. He died in Boulder, Colorado in 1909. I believe he was living with his daughter, Nancy BLAIR. I have not been able to find the death records for Abigail, however. I know that she did not die in Boulder, Colorado, and that Isaac was a widower at the time of his death.

I'm wondering if there is someone that would be able to check tax records or city directories for me in Palo, Nichols, or Cone to see if I could place Isaac and Abigail or their children. I would also like to check death records for Abigail WEBB HOLLENBECK in Muscatine County to see if she died before they left Iowa.

Anything you can tell me about these families would be greatly appreciated. Sharon Welch St. George, Utah welch@sginet.com

Hello: If I read it right on the IA GenWeb URL, you might be willing to do lookups in your county for Cemetery Records, Etc. After many years of searching, a kind gentleman on one of the Genealogy lists finally located my long lost grandfather Eugene Horace HALL, at age 2 in Muscatine Co., IA. This is the info he sent to me: He sent me a photocopy of the 1860 Census by snail mail, but because of vision problems I find it very difficult to read....hopefully, this is right: The other Census info is what I had previously attained, but was not able to connect it to my family, until I rec'd the Iowa information....what a wonderful day that was!!!

The funeral records in Saskatchewan, Can were destroyed by fire, and all I can find is a death notice dictated by his eldest son, stating Eugene was born in PA, and his father's name was Horace. I have a copy of his Canadian Homestead papers, 1910-1913, stating he was born in OH...Family rumors have his birthdate as 20 Mar 1856/1858..... The proverbial needle in a haystack!!! Would it be possible for me to ask you if you could find anything on any of these above people? I would gladly pay for copy and postage charges. Anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated. I am trying to find information additional information on my GRAVES relation. My gggrandfather Delatus GRAVES and my gggrandmother Rhodea HILL GRAVES were both born in 1825, he in Maryland and she in Kentucky. They homesteaded in SD (Dakota Territory) about 1886. The SD records I found state that they had 10 children, 9 boys and 1 girl that were born to them in Muscatine Iowa (probably starting around 1845 or so). Their children's names that I have been able to identify so far are Robert, Lincoln (Bob), Grant, Bert, Horace Greeley (Tim), and Will. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me or I am open to ANY suggestions. Thank you for your time! By the way, the message I just sent you regarding potential problems with the server was specific to census and vital records only. Sincerely, Judy Buhmann
