I am very interested in finding obits or other information about the
following family, if possible. They are buried in St. Mary's Cemeteries,
Wilton and Bloomington/Muscatine. I sent for death certificates to the
County Recorders Office in August and haven't heard a thing...they haven't
cashed my check either. This would be a Catholic family and I believe Frank
may be the son of my husbands second great grandmother (born in Longford Co,
1790) who came to this country in 1866 with her eight children. She lived in
Carroll, Iowa with her youngest daughter, died in 1898 (not a typo!).
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Sincerely,
Ruth Mullin------

I am not a direct descendant of Francis but of his brother Joseph Shannon and have been working with three other people who are direct decendants of Francis Shannon. Of Course we are all wanting and hoping to find out who were their parents. There are several members of this Shannon family we don't know anything about after 1860 but do now have some good-looking leads on some of them. Since I first wrote to you I have found out that one of Francis' daughters, "Lucetta" was in Cedar County, Iowa, Iowa twp. in the 1850 census which seems to confirm my guess that when Francis Shannon and wife Jane Allen split up, she stayed in Iowa and kept one of the daughters and Francis returned to Ohio with the other daughter. Jane obviously had relatives nearby, don't know who yet as I haven't, so far sorted out the Allens.

HI Dave, I did put in two Queries on my family and also my husbands. What I
need is the history of these surnames. Like the fathers, mothers, and
brothers and sisters names.
My family is huge, and I have so many names, but can not put them with each
family unless I get fathers and mothers names so I can put the right
brothers and sisters together. My family started in Germany:
GGgrandfather: Hen HENNINGS b. Germany
Ggrandfather: Christian HENNINGS b. 1848 in Germany
grandfather: Vern or Verne HENNINGS b. 1892 in Denison, Iowa. (they
can not find any records on his birth there)
my father LeRoyal had 10 children in his family I have all of them
my grandfather Vern or Verne had 12 in his family I have all of them
I do not know how many children or names for my Ggrandfather Christian,
thats why I am looking for all information on the HENNINGS that I can find,
hopeing soon I can find parents and births to put these families together.
One more thing, while I went back to see where and what I found in
Muscatine Co. I read about the War Veterens and found a Henry BLANK, thats
my husbands lost family: he was it says in Company A: was killed in the
Battle of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, His name is as captain above the name
William M. HENNINGS. How could I get information on Henry BLANK? Also the
William N. Hennings is writen in the list below this under the Forty-Fourth
Iowa Infantry.
Well if you could find anything on these families, I sure would appreciate
having it. And would be more than happy to pay for any copies of these
families. Maybe if you know someone that might be able to get me some
copies, you might pass my email to them, any ideas for me to try to get this
worked out, I live in north part of SD so to far away for me to go get
copies or serch. Thanks for any information you could help me with. Sandra

I am trying to put my HENNINGS family book together. I have so many HENNINGS names, I now need information to put them with the right mothers, fathers, and brothers and sisters. My HENNINGS families, came from Germany, most settled in Iowa, Neb. S.D. Many had families with 9, 10, and 12 chilren, I have a complete list of a 10 family and a 12 family. Now I am working on my Ggrandfather, Christian HENNINGS, b. July 9, 1848 in Germany. Married in Clinton, Iowa. I have been searching everwhere in Iowa for Christian's brothers and sisters. While I was searching in Muscatine Co. I found these HENNINGS:
Civil War Veterans of German Descent of Mauscatine Co.
William M. HENNINGS (Company A, was killed in war)
William N. HENNINGS ( Forty-Fourth Iowa Infantry)
I also found in Muscatine Co. marriage records 1846-1950:

I need to know who these HENNINGS are: marriage records, birth records, fathers, mothers, families? I am researching a Frederick Daly who lived in the Muscatine County area for much of his life. He was born april 28, 1802 in Vermont and died April 2, 1868 in Center Grove, Muscatine, Iowa. He was married to Eunice Upham May 10, 1824, but I do not know if they were married in Muscatine County. She was born in Vermont in 1803 and died July 26, 1880 in Davenport, Iowa. I do not know where this couple was buried. Frederick was supposed to have been a Clergyman. Their son David Daly/Daley/Daily was born August 27, 1835 in Bethlehem, Iowa and died in Colorado. He married Darleska Cunningham sometime before 1858, but I do not know where or when. This couple had five children-all born in Iowa: David (About 1858), William (Abt. 1863), Ella (Abt. 1869), Lisa (Abt. 1868) and Goodrich (January 1875). I would be grateful for any bit of information you could give me on this family. I did not mean to give you too much info, I was hoping to narrow down your search. If possibly you may have a burial record or bio that corresponds to Frederick?? I thank you for your time. Sincerely, Maria Jean

Subject: Death Record for 3rd wife of George Walter Deming
Dated: Tuesday, December 05, 2000 11:50 AM
From: Al Braley
I have found out that the person who invented the Deming Pump and started the Deming Pump Company was John Deming, younger brother of the George Deming whose bio you sent me. John built the business in Salem, OH, in the late 1800's. Apparently his sons built a factory in the early 1900's in Muscatine. I am now looking for something else. George Walter Deming married his third wife, Carrie R. Hitchcock, on 15 Feb 1893 Muscatine Co., IA- probably in West Liberty. That is the way her name was listed in the index of Iowa Marriages that I found on Ancestry.com. She was the widow of Clark Hitchcock, and her maiden name was Elizabeth Maria Rogers. She was a first cousin of George's second wife, Laura Minerva Cole, who died Jan 7, 1892. They were both granddaughters of David Hitchcock, Jr. (Jefferson Co., IA), who was apparently not directly related to Clark Hitchcock. George shot himself on March 4 1896, at his farm 2 miles northwest of West Liberty. A transcription of his obit says, "It is thought that the loss of his wife and his own failing health caused him to be deeply depressed." There is no surviving wife mentioned. I have not found a record of his third wife's death, or burial, but I'm sure that the obit is referring to her death c.1895, rather than to Laura's death in 1892. I would like to find out when Elizabeth Maria (Carrie) Rogers-Hitchcock-Deming actually died. I think George W. moved away from Fulton Twp. to West Liberty about the time of Laura's death. His parents and first wife are buried in Durant Cem., Fulton Twp. Muscatine Co. Thanks for your help, Al Braley

I surely do appreciate your offer to get "the rest of the info-ages, sex, etc" from the 1840 census, Muscatine County, Iowa. I am interested in the family of Francis Shannon and any of the Allens. Francis Shannon seems to have been our Shannon family maverick. He was married to Jane Allen January 15, 1839 in Fayette County, Ohio. They had 2 little girls first. They sure did that fast so maybe the girls were twins. I know one of the girls' name was Arvilla and am about 98% positive the other ones' name was Lucetta. I found Francis' family with a new wife and an infant son back in Fayette County in the 1850 census-but no Francis. Found out he was gone to the goldrush in 1850. Sometime between 1850 and 1860 Francis returned to Fayette County, Ohio and he and his family migrated to Putnam County, Ohio along with his brother Joseph Shannon and Joseph's family. What seems strange is that it appears there was a split between Francis and his wife Jane and Francis came back to Fayette County with daughter Arvilla and the other daughter seems to have stayed in Iowa with her mother (or other relative) but later turned up in Putnam County, Ohio and was married there. If you know of anyone else researching this Shannon family, please direct them to me. Joseph Shannon was my second great grandfather. Welthy Nachtigal

Edith did not like the name Mary, so went by the name Edith. She (taught

I am working on a family history and searching for more
information on this family:
Anna A. Kleist born Apr 1891 in Castle Rock Twp, Grant Co, WI. Anna died
after Oct 1975. [From her brother's obit she was living in Muscatine,
IA.]
married on 25 Aug 1915 in Iowa Co, WI to Henry W. Barnes, born about
1881 in Bad Axe, Huron Co, MI. [I don't know when he died either, but
aft 1946.]
They had at least two girls:
1. Isabel Marie Barnes born 10 Jun 1916 in Iowa Co, WI.
2. Anna L. Barnes born Sep 1919 in Cedar Twp, Lee Co, IA.
------------------
Sources: Marriage, Iowa Co, WI records.
Census: 1920 Census: Cedar Twp, Lee Co, IA; Henry is a section hand on
the railroad. Anna's mother, Mary Kleist, is living with them. Two
daughters as above.
Mary Kleist Death Certificate: She died in West Point, IA on 3 Jan 1946,
buried at East Cemetery, Salem, IA. Mrs. Henry Barnes is living in West
Point, IA and the Informant. I have never found an obit for Mary Kleist
in 1946. The West Point, IA library couldn't find one.
-------------------
Since Anna Kleist Barnes is living in Muscatine, IA in Oct 1975, perhaps
one of her daughters also lives there? Or the couple may have moved
there while Henry Barnes was living?
I would like to find the death record for Anna Kleist Barnes. Timeframe:
Oct 1975 +
Also Henry Barnes. Timeframe: 1946+
Both obituaries so I could find more on the two daughters. There may be
more children?
I will gladly pay for the xerox copies ($3 each) and obits ($3 each) and
any other records found on this family.
I hope you have the time to help me on this family. There is no hurry,
at your convenience.

I found the name of John H. Powell, listed in the Greenwood Cemetary. It has an age of 34 but no date of death or any other information. Is there anyway to find out if there is more information or dates?
The Muscatine Co. website looks really good.

So it was a big surprise that somebody from my family went to the United States.

Well, can you give me some further information about Carl Liesering (date of birth, date of death).
Maybe an american Liesering - clan exists?
It would be great to get some further information.

perhaps it's in Muscatine County. Her funeral was in her home, so does
anyone have any idea where she could be buried? She was born around 1834

I'm looking for the burial sites of some relatives who
are thought to have died around Wilton in the 1800s. They
are in the 1850 census in Muscatine Co. (Moscow Twp)
They are Wm. and Lucinda Slaughter (also spelled Slater),
or any of their STOOKEY grandchildren.
I saw a brief record for DJ Stookey in the Oakdale
listing (it says "plot records only," no dates).
Anyway, I checked the online records, and I was wondering if
you would please check the non-online Wilton cemetery indexes

Can you check those for me please?

I've "rescued" an old photograph of Louis Eugene STRICKLAND and Madeline
STRICKLAND taken at the A. Grossheim Studio in Muscatine, Iowa. On the
reverse of the photo it states that this is "Aunt Edith BRADSHAW STRICKLAND
& Uncle Winfred STRICKLAND's son and daughter". The photo was likely taken
in the 1890's and the children appear to be 4-8 years of age at the time.
I "rescued" the photograph hoping to trace the family and return the
photography, however, to date I have been unable to find a family
connection. I'm hoping that someone researching in this same area may be
able to assist.

From: Dale Ebersold
I have submitted a query to this site before, but because of some additional
information I received, I'd like to ask again.
I'm trying to establish contact with anyone familiar with Swiss families or
any Swiss influence in Muscatine during the middle 1800's. I am at loss as
to why my GGGF and family came from Switzerland in 1856 and went to
Muscatine, Iowa for one year. I found a web site where another family had a
similar visit in 1856. Two article excerpts follow:
The Swiss Settlers of Mormon Coulee - By George Zielke (From LaCrosse
County Historical Sketches, Series 1. Reprinted from the LaCrosse Tribune
and Leader-Press, LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Liesenfeld Press, 1931.)
Excerpt: "The Bernets went to Muscatine, Iowa, where some relatives had
settled, but came to Mormon Coulee in 1857."
CHARLES EBERSOLD, 88, CAST HIS FIRST VOTE FOR ABRAHAM LINCOLN - Local
Pioneer Prefers Horse and Buggy Period (From a 1931 Wabasha, MN newspaper.
Wabasha County-Herald biographical article.)
Excerpt: "In 1856, when Charles was a boy of 13, his family emigrated to
America, and the Swiss mother and father and six children settled in
Muscatine, Iowa, where they stayed for one year. Removing to Alma in 1857,
the Ebersold family located on a farm there."

What I did not ask for but would also like is the possible divorce record for Hugh DEVLIN and his first wife Lydia (nee GRAVES). On-line through Ancestry.com I found a record of a BENJAMIN GRANDY on
page 222 of the Iowa Cemetery Records, Cemeteries in Muscatine County.
The record gives his birthdate as 1810 and his death date as 6 Dec
1854. I am looking for more information about this individual.
My great, great grandfather was BENJAMIN GRANDY who was born in
Massachusetts about that time, and moved to Washington, NH as a young
step-child of William B. Crane. Benjamin was married in 1832 to Martha
Severance of Alexandria, NH. He is in the 1840 NH census, but I have
been unable to locate him since. The 1850 NH census shows only a
10-year old son James Grandy living with another family in Alexandria.
I have found no death records for Benjamin and Martha in NH records. I
have no reason to believe that the family was in Iowa, but this death
date is certainly a possible clue. Thank you for any help with this

Wm. Leffingwell is our ggg grandfather. Page # 460 of the 1840 census
The Greenwood Cemetery has a Wm. Leffingwell and Mrs.Wm.Leffingwell buried
there but there is no year. I believe they are the above family, my records
have William LEFFINGWELL, the second son of Rueben LEFFINGWELL and Elizabeth
(ADAMS) LEFFINGWELL, was born at Norwich, Conn. Jan. 4 1799, and died at
Muscatine, Iowa, Oct. 23, 1876. He married Sept. 23, 1821, Frances Ross
LEWIS, born Feb. 13 1802. Died Nov. 19, 1885.
( I WAS THINKING THESE MAY BE THE MRS. WM. AND WM. LEFFINGWELL BURIED AT
THE GREENWOOD CEMETERY. I WISH THEY GAVE THE YEAR.)
In Sept, 1838, before the age of railroads, he started for the Western
country, with his family, traveling by canal to Johnston, Pa; there building
a flat boat. Upon this, with their household goods, they floated down the
Ohio River, landing at Cairo, the 28th of Nov, 1838, the trip from New York
consuming 78 days. In the spring of 1839, he removed with his family to the
town of Bloomington, where he resided until the time of his death.
In 1856, he was elected Mayor of the city of Muscatine, having
previously filled various other official offices, such as County
Commissioner, Clerk of the District Court, etc., he lived to celebrate his
golden wedding, in the presence of Children Grandchildren and
Great-grandchildren in 1871.
Mr. LEFFINGWELL gave considerable attention to Freemasonry, and was
elected in 1864 (having received the first thirty-two degrees of that order),
to one of its highest offices in the State of Iowa.

I really do not have very much information about Joshua Henry Canon. He
was born 1832, and moved to Muscatine, Iowa, was the druggist, etc, etc.
Died 25 Feb 1906, I do not have his obit nor do I know where he is buried
(what cemetery).
His wife was Rhoda Smalley Canon, daughter of Andrew and Rhoda Smalley of
Muscatine. Rhoda was born Mar 1837, Carthage, Ohio.
They had four children. Samuel and Andrew were twins and died young.
Nellie Fay Canon married William E. Bliven (27 June 1888). They had four
children: Miriam, Helen, Albert L. and Anna.
Anna Bertha Canon married C. E. Hodgson. Anna was adopted by Joshua and
Rhoda Canon, Apr 1873. Later in life she resided in Rock Island, Illinois.
Dave, I will certainly appreciate any obits or where the cemeteries are
located. Thanks again for your help.

They are in Greenwood Cemetery as

he went to the States in 1864 so his birth should be around 1836 and his
death at age 58 around 1894.

Subject: SARAH JANE (PAUGH) WILHITE
Dated: Monday, July 31, 2000 12:59 PM
From: Carol
We understand that one of our ancestors was buried in Muscatine, Iowa.
Although we have done extensive research on several family lines, she is one
of our more illusive ones.
Her name was Sarah Jane Paugh before she married John H. (Hall) Wilhite.
Paugh may have been a married name as she may have had children when they
married. On the other hand, other sources indicate her father was Michael
Paugh and her mother Sarah A., and so these children may have been younger
siblings in her care. She is believed to have been born in 1823 and from an
1850 IL census there are Paughs listed who were from Indiana and Ireland.
They were on the same page as the Wilhites who were formerly of Indiana and
before that KY. However, we do not have any documented birth information for
her.
Equally vague is that we do not know when she married my great-great-great
grandfather but the estimate is no earlier than 1851 and no later than 1868
because they had four children before John Hall Wilhite's death in 1872, and
the census mentioned shows him married to Charlotte A. in 1850. Their
children are: Michael Wilhite, Sarah Wilhite, President H. Wilhite, and
Elizabeth Wilhite. These names may also provide clues.
We understand she was buried in Muscatine although it was our thought that
John Wilhite was buried in Montgomery, IN where he had lived prior to Mercer
Co., IL and where his mother is buried. We know that Mercer and Rock Island
Couties are just across the river more or less from Muscatine so it is very
conceivable that some of their children moved to Iowa and that Sarah Jane
went to live with relatives with their young children after his death.
If you can find death records for her or any of the Paughs or Wilhites in
this particular family cluster that would be helpful to us. It is likely
that they lived in close proximity and therefore died in close proximity
within Muscatine or Scott Co., Iowa.
Thank you.

I am researching Joseph M.
Huber and his wife Emma Rellas (nee Lucas) that resided in Muscatine
County from before 1875 until after 1910. Can you steer me to any
particular person or group that could lend a hand, and what it would
cost?
This, in a nut shell, is what I know right now:
1880 Census shows them in Milton T.P. (township?), Muscatine
County. Joseph 28, Ema 24, Annie 4, William 2, and Sophie as
6/12. Joseph born in Prussia as was both his folks. Ema born in
Indiana, her dad in Penn and mom in Ohio.
1900 Census they are in Lake Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, shows
he immigrated in 1854 and "Na" in naturalization block, therefore, I
assume means he was naturalized. There was Joseph M. 48, Mary
E(mma?) 43, William 22, Sophie 20, Charles 18, Mary E. 12, George
17, Daniel 15, Frances J. 10, Leonard 5, and Lebbis (Lewis) 3.
Shows 11 kids, 10 alive, therefore Annie must have died.
1910 Census shows them still in Lake Township, Muscatine County,
Iowa. Joseph 59, Emma R. 54, Daniel 24, George 27, Mary E. 22,
Frank J. 20, Leo L. 15, Lewis J.13, Abraham Lucas, father-in-law 79,
and Mary mother-in-law 80. Says Joseph immigrated in 1855.

I was amazed to find a piece of information I've spent hours searching for
on the cemetary listing. My Great-grandmother, Anna Olson, is buried in
the Oakdale cemetary. Her husband, Louis Olson, is also buried there. You
also have listed someone named Anna OLSEN, who died on the same day, with
reference to plot records. This is probably Anna Olson, with a different
spelling. Do you know if any medical information is listed on the plot
records, i.e., cause of death, etc? For medical reasons, I am trying to
find the cause of death of Anna Olson. Also, I noticed an Albert Olson who
died in 1916 and wondered if he might be related.
Anna and Louis Olsons's children eventually settled around the
Rochester/Tipton areas. Although she is buried in Oakdale cemetary, it is
very possible that she lived in Cedar County. Therefore I am unsure of
which county to contact regarding any death records.
Any help you could provide would be very much appreciated.

I am looking for the burial site of my husbands gggrandfather, William D. Long who died 13 Sept 1853 and is supposedly buried on the family farm in Township 76 Muscatine County. I believe the land discriptions is as follows: SE 1/4 of NW 1/4 E 1/2 of SW 1/4 NW 1/4 of SE 1/4 Sect 20 Range 3 West Township 76. His widow Julia Ann Long sold the farm 2 Mr 1857 to David Peck. She and the children moved on to Keokuk County. It is believed a brother Jacob Long stayed in that area.
Can you be of any assistance to my search?

Subject: WALTER E. LIGHT AND FAMILY---MUSCATINE COUNTY RECORDS
Dated: Tuesday, July 04, 2000 2:28 PM
From: Madge Little
I am searching for a needle in a haystack and hoping you may be able to
help. We are seeking information about WALTER E. LIGHT, his wife, HARRIET
COX LIGHT and their two children, WARREN and ADELINE. The family is listed
in the 1920 census of Muscatine County as living in West Liberty. We have no
record of them after that time. Do you have any ideas as to where we could
search? We cannot find any of them in the Social Security Death Indexes.
Walter was born in 1883, Harriet in 1881, Warren in 1905 and Adeline in 1912.
Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks so much. Madge Little.

Subject: LUKE SELLS SIGNED PETITION IN 1849--EARLY SETTLERS
Dated: Saturday, July 01, 2000 11:28 AM
From: Anita M. Kendall
I visited the Muscatine Iowa website this am and was very surprised to see
the name of Luke Sells. Luke Sells was my husband's great grandfather on his
mother's side. He was married in Muscatine, Iowa to Susannah Beaumont and
they later settled in St. Louis abt. 1870. I would love to be able to have a
copy of the petition that his name appears in. Do you know where I could
obtain a copy of this?
I also saw the name of Major John Sherfey on the website. This John Sherfey
was a brother of Soloman Sherfey who settled in Burlington Iowa in 1839.
Soloman Sherfey was a great great grandfather of my husband on his fathers
side. I would also like to get a copy of his biography that is found in a
Muscatine book. I do have a copy of an old letter written to Soloman Sherfey
from his brother, John Sherfey dating abt. 184? (don't have it in front of me
now). If you are interested, I could type the letter and send it to you for
the website or I could make a photocopy and mail it to you.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks
Anita M. Kendall
