CATHOLIC CEMETERY
(abandoned)
Lansing Township, Allamakee county Iowa

A Catholic Cemetery, once was located on State Highway 9 about .5 mile east of the junction of Road X6A and State Highway 9 or 2.5 miles west of Lansing, Iowa. Reinterments are assumed to have been made in the Gethsemane Cemetery.

Notes about the abandoned Catholic cemetery
~compiled by S.Ferrall for Allamakee co. IAGenWeb

The assumption that the reinterments were all made in the Gethsemane cemetery is incorrect. It is very likely that the remains of some of the deceased continue to repose at the site of the old cemetery.

The grounds of the old cemetery proved over time to be quite wet and boggy, and in the early 1890's it was decided that a higher burial site was needed. A new property was decided upon and Gethsemane cemetery was established in late 1893, with the first burial in 1894. This news blurb appeared in the Allamakee Journal, January 17, 1894: "A start has been made in the new Catholic cemetery near town, M. Schobert, SR, being buried there yesterday."

Families were notified as much as possible that the remains of their deceased loved ones could and should be disinterred from the Catholic cemetery and reburied at Gethsemane or another cemetery. Most were, but an unknown number were not. Occasionally disinterrments were reported in the Lansing newspapers. The sad fact remains that without a record of some kind, many researchers cannot be entirely certain that their ancestor was reinterred elsewhere.

Amann, Carolina E. 1876-1883
Amann, Ernest G. 1880-1883

Mrs. Charles Amann of Prairie du Chien is here looking after the removal of her two children from the old Catholic cemetery to a resting place beside their father, the late Chas. Amann.
~Lansing Mirror, April 12, 1901, pg 4

Note: Charles Amann 1849-1900, is buried in Saint Gabriel cemetery, Prairie du Chien, WI. The gravestone as pictured on FindaGrave includes the inscriptions of Caroline (1844-1912), Ernest (1876-1882) and Caroline E. (1880-1882). The latter two being the children originally buried in the old Catholic cemetery. Both children actually died in 1883, not 1882 as their inscriptions show.

Fleming, William P. died 1895
alternate surname spelling Flemming

He was the infant son of W.E. Fleming and "was buried Saturday in the old Catholic cemetery".
~Allamakee Journal, Wednesday, February 13, 1895; pg 2

Note: Assuming that William's obituary is correct about his original burial place, it is possible that his remains were eventually reburied in Gethsemane. Interested researchers will want to verify.

Quinn, Michael (1819-1879)
Quinn, Mary (Laughlin)
(1822-1894)
Quinn, sister
(Eva?)

The remains of the deceased parents and sister of Miss Mary and J.G. Quinn, were last week removed from the old Catholic cemetery to Gethsemane and soon there will be but few left in that neglected spot, a large majority having already been transferred to other burial places.
~Allamakee Journal, 11/21/1906; pg 2

Note: Included in the 'Woodmansee' book as buried in Gethsemane are John Gideon Quinn, died 1928, his father Michael Quinn, (1819-1879) and Eva Quinn (1858-1893). The mother, Mary (Laughlin) Quinn (1822-1894) is not listed. Eva may be the 'sister' whose remains were removed from the Catholic semetery. The 1870 U.S. census includes Ellen Quinn (age 10), in Michael's household. The 1885 IA State census, Lafayette twp. includes Elly Quinn (age 23), in the elder Mary's household. Miss Mary M. Quinn (died 1920) is also buried in Gethsemane, but like her mother, is not included in 'Woodmansee'.

Troendle, Fridolin 'Fred' 1820-1899
Troendle, Martha (Schmidt / Smith) died 1887

Fred died at La Crosse, WI, his remains were brought to Lansing, with "burial being in the old Catholic cemetery beside his wife who died twelve years ago."
~Lansing Mirror, Friday, February 24, 1899, pg 1

Note: Although the obituary gives burial next to his wife in the old Catholic cemetery, Fred & his wife Martha have a large gravestone in Gethsemane. Martha died prior to the establishment of Gethsemane cemetery, so their remains were either reinterred from the old Catholic cemetery, the obituary gave incorrect burial place, or the monument is a cenotaph.
