WORLD WAR I CASUALTIES

RINGGOLD COUNTY, IOWA

World War I is also referred to as "The First World War," "The Great War," or the "War to End All Wars." It was a global military conflict involving the majority of all of the world's great powers which formed two opposing military alliances: the Entente Powers against the Central Powers. Over 70 million military personnel were mobilized into perhaps the largest war in history. Over 15 million people lost their lives, making World War I one of the most deadliest conflicts known to mankind.

The catalyst for World War I occurred on June 28, 1914 with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophia by Bosnian-Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip. Austria-Hungary's demands after the assassination upon the Kingdom of Serbia led to a series of alliances which put all of the major European powers at war within a matter of weeks. An armistice was signed on September 29, 1918 at Saloniki, however many date the official end of World War I as the signing of the Versailles Treaty in 1919. By the end of the war, four major imperial powers had been militarily and politically defeated - Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire with the latter two ceasing to exist. The League of Nations was formed with renewed hope of preventing any other similiar conflict. The United States lost 116,708 soldiers with 205,690 wounded in World War I.
