MALOY, IOWA CENTENNIAL HISTORY: 1887 - 1987

MIKE HAMMON FAMILY

Michael Cornelius HANNON and Florence Agnes MIX were married in September, 1914, in Maloy.

Mike was the son of Michael and Elizabeth DALE HANNON, and Florence's parents were James Wilder MIX and Jennie O'CONNOR MIX. Both Mike and Florence were born northwest of Maloy>

The two made their home in Sectiton 7. They were the parents of five children: Veronica, Jack, Paul, Betty and Gene. The children received their early eduction in the Highland rural school. When the school was closed in 1933, the four younger children enrolled at Maloy where all were graduated.

Veronica. graduated from Benton and married Art PINE from Benton. Art was a tail gunner on a plane which was shot down in the Pacific in 1944 [WWII]. Later Vernoica married James MARKLEY. Their home was in Mount Ayr, where Veronica was a long-time employee of the Security State Bank. Both Veronica and Jim are deceased.

Jack also was MIA in WW II after a mission in Leyte in the Philippines.

Paul married Doris TRIMBLE. They have always lived in Mount Ayr where Doris recently retired from her position in Hawkeye State Bank.

Betty married Jack MONAGHAN. They also lived in Mount Ayr where Jack was a mail carrier and Betty is still [1987] employed at the Rexall Pharmacy. Jack is deceased, and Betty and her mother Florence (age 94) live in Mount Ayr. Her father Mike passed away in 1956.

Betty and Jack have two sons, Barry and Allyn. Barry married Karen ANDREWS and his children are Tristan and Alison. Barry is the assistant vice-president of the Guthrie State Bank in Guthrie Center.

Allyn married Brenda KROGH. Their children are Brandon and Brett. Allyn is a high school principal at Buffalo Center, Iowa.

Both Barry and Allyn graduated from MACHS [Mount Ayr Community High School] and Northwest Missouri State University.

Gene passed away in 1984 after a long and successful carreer as basketball coach in Bedford. His wife, Barbara FOX, and their children, John and Maria, live in Bedford.

NOTES: Michael Cornelius "Mike" HANNON was born August 5, 1890, the son of Michael and Elizabeth (DALE) HANNON, and died at the age of 65 years on March 23, 1956. He married Florence Agnes MIX on September 30, 1914. Florence was born December 20, 1892, and died at the age of 97 years in 1990. Mike and Florence were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.

Veronica Mary (HANNON) PINE MARKLEY was born near Maloy on August 20, 1915, and died at the age of 67 years November 21, 1982. She was interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr. Vernoica married in 1937 Arthur "Art" PINE who died in service during World War II in 1944. She married James Rodney MARKLEY on July 8, 1946 who preceded her in death in 1980.

TSgt John D. "Jack" HANNON, pictured at right, was killed in action on December 12, 1944. He was 27-years-old.

Paul Donald HANNON was born in Maloy, July 10, 1919, and died in November of 2006. He married Doris TRIMBLE on March 5, 1946 and was the owner and operator of HANNON'S Sinclair Station, a popular hangout for the Mount Ayr youth. Paul was interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.

Betty (HANNON) MONAGHAN Betty married John "Jack" MONAGHAN on May 2, 1947. Jack was born on May 2, 1923, and died November 20, 1975, and was interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.

Gene "Pee Wee" HANNON served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
