Hello again,
Upon further research, I found an 1860 Federal Census record of a 'Caroline' Balcomb living in Jordan Tsp, Fillmore Co, MN with Henry Balcomb, Alonzo Balcomb, and a family named Faver. I believe that this 'Caroline' Balcomb was most likely my ancestor Sally Caroline (Averill) Balcomb, since a comment made by my late grandmother indicated that her sons Henry and Alonzo became successful farmers in Minnesota after they relocated from New York.

I do think that it is likely that the "Mr. Mears" that Sally Caroline (Averill) Balcomb married is the Elijah C. Mears that you found in your research. They would have had to have married after the 1860 Census, and after the death of Mears' first wife Sarah (the person who was probably buried in Pleasant Grove, Olmsted, MN in 1863). That would also indicate to me that the son Theodore Mears was probably by Mears' first wife (unless the son was born out of wedlock before Elijah Mears and my ancestor were married).
All sources I have found thus far refer to my ancestor as 'Sally Caroline' or 'Caroline'. I haven't found any indication in my research that my ancestor ever went by the name of Sarah, especially since she already had a sister by that name. I recently discovered a website with information about her brother Lafayette 'Jerome' Averill. Scans of their family bible refer to her as 'Sally Caroline' and 'Caroline'. Another page on that same web domain has .pdf files of the Averill ancestry, and it states that 'Sally Caroline' died in 1869 in Iowa City, Wright, IA.

After you provided me with the lead of Mr. Mears' first name and whereabouts, I did a search for him on Ancestry.com, and found mention that he was an early member of the Reformed LDS Church (I do not have a membership to access the full records). This would fit in with comments made by my grandmother that Sally Caroline became interested in the Mormon religion, married Mr. Mears, and moved to Iowa. Regarding the comment that Sally Caroline was buried in Ma-keta: I am wondering now if that could have meant a former territory called 'Mahkahta', which I have seen mention of recently when researching various counties in Minnesota and Iowa?
It looks like I still need to continue my research into exactly when and where Sally Caroline (Averill) Balcomb Mears died and was buried, but I think you have probably solved the mystery as to who "Mr. Mears" was.
Thank you again for your assistance!
