In Response To: Seeking info on ancestor who reportedly died in Ma_keta (C. Kunz)

This is what I believe may be your family:

Sally Caroline Averill was born in Vermont in about 1810. She first married Augustus Balcom. This information is from posts on the internet.

This is what I located:
I think that Elijah C. Mears was married to a Sarah Everets who died between 1840 and 1848 [based on death record of their daughter Rachel Marion Mears Patridge Nye]; They had three daughters Frances H. [born Vermont], Rachel Marion, and Clarissa [both born in Canada]. Elijah then married Sally/Sarah (Averill) Balcom in about 1847-1848 and had a son, Theodore on January 11, 1849 in Illinois. In the 1850 census, they were living in Bloomfield, Clinton County, Iowa; from 1851 [when Frances Mears was buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Maquoketa] until at least 1854, they were living in Brookfield, Jackson County, Iowa where Elijah was the postmaster; By 1856, Elijah had purchased land in Olmsted County, Minnesota in Pleasant Grove Township where Sarah Mears died on February 23, 1863.

These are the sources I consulted:

According to John Dalby's Minnesota cemetery database: www.dalbydata.com

There is a Sarah Mears buried in the Pleasant Grove [Union] Cemetery in Pleasant Grove Township, Olmsted County, Minnesota. The listing:

County: Olmsted
Name: Sarah Mears
Death Date: 23 Feb 1863
Cemetery: Union
Comments: AGE 53 YRS. 2 MOS. WIFE OF E.C.

In the same cemetery is Theodore Robert Mears and his wife, Sarah Bently Mears

Elijah C. Mears purchased 160 acres of land from the US Government on June 10, 1856 in Olmsted County, Minnesota; Legal description: NE 1/4, Section 25, Township 105, Range 13. Consulting the 1878 Olmsted County Plat book, he was no longer the owner.

The United States Post Office Directory and Postal Guide, published in 1853:
Listing for Post Office in Brookfield, Jackson County, Iowa - postmaster, Elijah C. Mears

**

Prescott Partridge and Marion Rachel Mears had a daughter, Frances H. Partridge who was born on June 29, 1854 in Jackson County, Iowa and died on September 10, 1867 in Pleasant Grove, Olmsted, Minnesota; She was probably named for her deceased aunt, Frances H. Mears.

Hope this helps a little.
