It looks more and more like 'Sarah' Mears (Elijah's second wife) probably is my ancestor Sally Caroline (Averill) Balcom. The information you've provided certainly seems to fit closely with the family lore that was passed along in my grandmother's letter, and it is by far the best lead I've had in years!

I was not previously aware that she'd had a child by Mr. Mears. Her four children by Augustus Balcom were: Henry Hudson, Caroline Cristabel, Mary Mercy, and Alonzo Augustus (my ancestry is through Mary Mercy Balcom and her spouse Daniel Gibbins).

I'm looking forward to adding your information to my genealogy program. Thanks again!
