I am very interested in knowing more about this expedition to the Calif. Gold Fields. I believe the JOHN DEVLIN you've identified is our ancestor. There is a biography posted for John Devlin on the Clayton Co. site. The bio mentions that John Devlin went to Calif. in 1852, leaving his family in St. Louis, MO. until his return in 1855. He apparently became injured in Calif., spent all his funds recuperating for one year in CA, then went to Oregon for one year, and returned to St. Louis for his family. They then removed to Jefferson Township, Clayton Co. to a farm (section 33) he had entered into in 1849. Several descendants today own wedding rings supposedly made of gold from the Calif. Gold Rush. Have you found any news articles? What other documentation or information do you have? Our John Devlin later went to Australia several times, as mentioned in his obit. I'm wondering if he went there for the Australian Gold Rush. Thanks for any information.
