Since this thread began 11 years ago I have learned that our John Devlin did go to the California Gold Rush in 1852. He left his wife and children in St. Louis until he returned in 1855, when they settled in Jefferson, near Guttenberg, on their farm. The newer info I have is that he had a sister named Bridget Devlin, b. Londonderry 1831, who "came to Portand Oregon "by way of St. Louis" and was the first bride married in the new Catholic St. Mary's Church in Portland Oregon to Arthur Fahie, b. Tipperary, Ireland. They lived in Portland the rest of their lives. I have other information that said that John Devlin was injured in a mining accident in Calif and spent all the money he got in CA to recuperate in Oregon. I surmise that when he went west from Iowa in 1852, he escorted his sister, Bridget to Portland. Perhaps she already knew Arthur Faihie or perhaps she me him in Portland - I don't know. I also surmise that John spent his time in Oregon recuperating in 1853/54 with his sister in Portland. Has anyone gotten any documentation or information about the party from McGregor to CA goldfields? Does the name Faihie ring a bell?
