Janette, I found the biography of Leonard Ayers on-line at http://searches1.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/archives/ia/clayton/bios/1882/a.txt There are many Clayton County Biographies there, and I looked through them for men who went to California in 1852, the same year as the Bass brothers I am researching. That's why I said "possible participant" in the McGregor group who went to the goldfields in the spring of 1852, for I am not sure which ones were actually in that particular group. There were only two listed as going from the area that year besides John G. Bass and his brother George Bass, and Ayers was one of them. He may have been with the McGregor group, or with another group altogether. Hundreds of Mid-western communities had groups of men who banded together to go to California during those early years. We always have the image of the lone prospector, leading his faithful burro who is loaded down with the pickaxe and the gold pan. But the reality is that most of the miners went with groups of friends and relatives from their own hometowns, having banded together for safety and companionship. Good luck with your search for information on Leonard.
