VIETNAM WAR CASUALTIES
RINGGOLD COUNTY, IOWA
The Vietnam War was fought from 1959 to April 30, 1975 between the Communist
North Vietnam and their allies, and the government of South Vietnam with the support of the United States
and other member nation sof the Southeast Asia Treat Organization (SEATO). The United States entered into the war
to prevent a Communist takeover of South Vietnam, with U.S. military advisors arriving in 1950. The United
States' involvment escalated in the early 1960's with combat units deployed beginning in 1965. The United
States' involvement peaked in 1968 during the time of the Tet Offensive. Although all parties involved signed
a peace treaty in January of 1973, hostile engagements continues. The North Vietnamese army captured Saigon
in April of 1975. North and South Vietnam were reunited the following year. The
Vietnam War was the longest military conflict in United States History.
The
Vietnam War resulted in the heavy loss of human life: 3 to 4 million Vietnamese on both sides; 1.5 to 2 million
Laotians and Cambodians; and, 58,159 American soldiers with another 304,000 who were wounded.
