VIETNAM WAR CASUALTIES

RINGGOLD COUNTY, IOWA

The Vietnam War was fought from 1959 to April 30, 1975 between the Communist North Vietnam and their allies, and the government of South Vietnam with the support of the United States and other member nation sof the Southeast Asia Treat Organization (SEATO). The United States entered into the war to prevent a Communist takeover of South Vietnam, with U.S. military advisors arriving in 1950. The United States' involvment escalated in the early 1960's with combat units deployed beginning in 1965. The United States' involvement peaked in 1968 during the time of the Tet Offensive. Although all parties involved signed a peace treaty in January of 1973, hostile engagements continues. The North Vietnamese army captured Saigon in April of 1975. North and South Vietnam were reunited the following year.

The Vietnam War was the longest military conflict in United States History. The Vietnam War resulted in the heavy loss of human life: 3 to 4 million Vietnamese on both sides; 1.5 to 2 million Laotians and Cambodians; and, 58,159 American soldiers with another 304,000 who were wounded.
