AMERICAN LEGION

  American Flag.jpg A Legion meeting was called on
September 27th of 1946 with the purpose of re-opening an American Legion Post which had previously been discontinued since 1932. At this meeting, the following officers were elected: Hurbert HOLLAND, Commander; Lyle CAVIN, Vice-Commander; Howard Parker, 2nd Vice-Commander; Guy PARKER, Adjutant; Barton ABARR, Treasurer; Trustees Junior HIATT, Elvin WAUGH, Eguene OLNEY; Clifford NORRIS, Historian; Rev. J. E. M. CHAMBERS, Chapliain, and Jack TODD, Sergeant at Arms. The officers were installed in the October meeting by S. W. HOLLAND of Mount Ayr.

The Post was named after Carl A. HERRINGTON. Private HERRINGTON of Redding answered his Country's call, serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division. He lost his life October 8, 1918 in France and was interred at Somme American Cemetery in Picardie, France.

Regular meetings were held the second Monday of the month.

The Legion's projects over the years have included the sponsorship of a local skating rink and the purchase of playground equipment for Redding's town park.

An American Legion Auxiliary was organized and continued for many years. It is no longer active [1981].

Officers of the Post in 1981 were: James R. JEANES, Commander; Rexie DAVIS, Adjutant; and, Harold WALKUP, Financial Officer. The membership in 1981 included George SAVILLE, Virgil FINDLEY, Algie SAVILLE, Junior JAMES, Curtis WILSON, Howard THOMPSON, Elvis HUNT, Amon HUNT, Leo McDANIEL, Sam TAYLOR, Walter JOHNSTON, Denzil WAUGH, Jubal HUNT, Maurice HUNT, David MAUDLIN, Forrest SHIELDS, Steve SMITH, Larry DENNEY, Ben HILL, Paul HILL, Marion THURMAN, Dick SNETHEN, Paul MORIN, Maurice CARPENTER, Gary LAMBERT, Wendell WALLACE, Sid GNITT, Howard PARKER, Greg WESTFALL, Barton ABARR, and Eugene OLNEY.

In 1981 the Post sponsored the purchase of flags and flag poles for display at the area's five cemeteries. 75 flags were flown on Memeroial Day, 1981.
