Mehitable ELLIS WOODS
a/k/a 'Aunty Woods'

A Tribute to 'Aunty Woods'

This estimable lady was a tireless worker for others in need, both at home and in the Civil War battlefields for 'her boys', the soldiers of Iowa. She is buried here in the Old Fairfield City Cemetery with the first two of her three husbands; the third was buried at Fort Whipple, Arizona, following a hunting accident.

'Aunty Woods' has a large monument, standing nearly eleven feet tall, and a small unadorned headstone between those of her first two husbands, Gilbert FOX and Parrish ELLIS. On this page are photos of the WOODS plot and Mehitable's gravestone, along with links to her obituary, biography, and several documents that appear on our county message boards.
