Obituary -- Mrs. M. E. "Aunty" WOODS.

----

"Fairfield Ledger", Sept. 23, 1891, Pg. 3, Col. 7

DEATH OF MRS. WOODS. Thousands of Iowa people will be pained to learn of the death of Mrs. M. E. WOODS. "Aunty" WOODS had been in her usual health and only Monday evening was present at a banquet which she tendered to the members of the Ellis Hose Company..... No woman who ever lived in Fairfield had ever done so much to endear herself to our people. She had been a mother to three generations of men in this city. To the old soldiers she was especially dear, for she it was who ministered to their wants on the march, in camp, and on the field of battle... In all the long years of the war she followed the Iowa soldiers wherever they went, braving all dangers and struggling against all difficulties that she might be with them when they needed her. She was one of the few women in the United States who bore a military title, that of Major, and for several years she had been the recipient of a pension in rocognition of her services. Funeral will take place from the residence tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock.
