Rebellion, Vol. 5
This men in this regiment were mainly from the counties of
Fayette, Winneshiek, Bremer, Chickasaw and Howard. "A series of
misfortunes—the greatest of which was its location in unhealthy
localities pursued the regiment, and prevented it from making a
battle record equal to that of any of the regiments which had
preceded it to the field...Indeed, their fortitude and endurance
was severely tested in contending with the insidious and
relentless foe, which, in the form of disease, made sad havoc in
their ranks. The compiler of this historical sketch will endeavor
to do justice to this splendid Iowa regiment." At the end of 1864,
the 38th and the 34th Regiments were consolidated into one,
thereafter known as the 34th.
