One more follow-up here.

I see a David Crane, born OH age 55 (August 1844) widowed living in Washington, Poweshiek Co., IA during the 1900 census. There are brother Ira (31) sister Effie (39), sister Edith (28), step-mother Anna Sutton (70), aunt Mary Tillman (66), and a nephew with first name hard to read - last name Carroll living with him. says was married 28 years which means if this is the right David and married 1860, wife died c.1888.

This is the only one I found in 1900 census for any state that best fits your David.
