In Response To: Marriage certificates, what information is contained in them (Sharon Knape)

A marriage in 1860 will not show parents. Your best bet is looking for a death certificate and see if it lists her parents.

Doing a search on the 1880 census, looks like your Martha's middle name may be Jane and see a David Crane (born c.1845 OH) and wife Jennie (born c.1846 OH) on the Lynn Grove, Jasper County, IA census. No children listed. Only David Crane old enough in the 1880 Iowa census to have married in 1860.

If this is your couple, it states that her parents were born in Maryland. Your Admiral David Dixon Porter was born 1813 in Pennsylvania and being neighbors as well as early state border changes, a good possible match as father or uncle due to age.
