One more follow-up

I see in the 1856 census for Jones County that there are two possibilities for the parents. Keep in mind that only 4 years later Martha J. married so parents most likely would be there then.

Jonathan Porter (1808-1875) married to Jane Seeright. This info was from the LDS site but this couple is shown in the Greenfield, IA area.

The other is Joseph Porter (1812-1885) married to an Abigail DeVinney. Had to be second marriage for both because says 1852 Iowa. This couple is in Cass township and in Burt Co., NB by 1880. She was first married to a Marrs.

Both the above had a daughter born in Ohio about the right age. Jonathan's was a M.J. Porter and Joseph's was Martha Porter. Both men were born in PA. Jane Seeright was born in Ireland and Abagail DeVinney was born in Indiana but is not relative to Martha.

Hope this gives you some leads?
