Information on child #9: Blanche Ann Campbell (who would later become my great-grandmother)

*Blanche Ann Campbell was born on 31 March 1889 in Brighton, Washington Co., Iowa, to Samuel Campbell and Isabell Nancy Parks Basford. Sources: her Iowa Dept. of Public Health death certificate; birth record at the Wapello Co. courthouse; her obituary; and Ottumwa Cemetery record-keeping gatehouse.

* Blanche Ann married William W. Stevens in Ottumwa, Wapello Co., Iowa, on 17 September 1907.

*I think Blanche married her 2nd husband, William Van Cleave, between March 1914 and March 1915.

*William W. Stevens (son of Sarah Ellen [Barker] Cox Babb Stevens and her third husband, Scott Stevens) was born in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa, on 10 July 1885 and died of an illness (I think it was pneumonia) at an early age on 25 February 1914 at home in Ottumwa. He was buried at Ottumwa Cemetery where his parents and some siblings were also buried.

*I have an obituary somewhere in my collection of William Van Cleave, who died after 1930 and was buried at a cemetery in Blakesburg, Iowa.

*Blanche Ann [Campbell] Stevens Van Cleave also died at an early age from pulmonary pneumonia primarily (but I think also from complications of childbirth) on 10 March 1916 at home in Ottumwa.

*Children of Blanche Ann and her 1st husband, William W. Stevens:

(a) Scottie Samuel Stevens (b. 5 Feb. 1909, Ottumwa, Wapello Co., Iowa; m. Janet Awilda Shilling [b. 16 Nov. 1915-d. as Mrs. James Minter, 1st May 2005] on 13 Sept. 1937 at Albia, Monroe Co., Iowa; d. of injuries resulting from a train accident on 22nd Sept. 1965 in Ottumwa) Scottie and Janet are both buried at Ottumwa Cemetery. They are my paternal grandparents.

(b) Mamie Stevens Hall (still living...she will be 96 years old soon)

(c) Ellen Belle Stevens Friedrich (also still living...she is 94 years old this year)

(d) William Walter Lee Stevens (b. 4 June 1914 in Ottumwa; d. there on 1st March 1915 of pneumonia) Burial: Ottumwa Cemetery.

Daughter of Blanche Ann and her 2nd husband, William Van Cleave:

(a) Christina Ann Van Cleave (b. 24 December 1915 in Ottumwa; died of pneumonia on 24 Feb. 1916; and was buried at Ottumwa Cemetery) She died about 2 weeks before her mother's death.

With Blanche's death, it left her three surviving children orphans at so young ages. Sometime later, Mamie and Ellen were adopted by a family and went to live with them. Scottie stayed behind at the orphanage home until he was 16. After that, he lived with some Stevens and Campbell relatives at one time or another until his marriage.

Information on the children of Blanche Ann:

From "Birth Records, 5, Wapello County, Iowa, 1911-1917" at the Wapello Co. Courthouse in Ottumwa.....

* (page 145) William Walter Lee Stevens, boy, born in Ottumwa on June 4, 1914. He was 4th child born to Wm W. Stevens and Blanche Campbell. This record said Blanche was born in Drakesville, Iowa. Number of children of mother: 4. Number of her children living: 4.

* (page 176) Christine L. Van Cleave, female, born on April 21, 1915, to Wm Van Cleave and Blanche Higgins living at 825 W. Mill. (But Christina's death certificate and cemetery record show her date of birth as 24 Dec. 1915 and I follow these, instead).

From "Birth Records, 4, Wapello Co., 1899-1911"

*Scott S. Stevens, male, born 5 Feb. 1908 in Ottumwa to Wm W. Stevens and Blanche Campbell. His funeral record, cemetery record, obituary and family information state his date of birth as 5 Feb. 1909. The year of 1909 may be correct since his parents' marriage took place in September 1907, unless his mother was already pregnant by that time. If so, then 1908 may be correct. But for now I am using 1909 as the year of his birth.

* I have birth record information for Aunt Mamie and Aunt Ellen, but I cannot put it here since they are both still living.

Information on other stuff:

From "Death Register, 4, page 140-335, 1907-1916" at Wapello Co. Courthouse:

Cause of death: tuberclosis. Buried at Ottumwa Cemetery. Married. Occupation: housewife. Father: Samuel Campbell (born in Penn). Mother: Nancy Parks. Informant: Mary Kukus (as recorded) of Wichita, KS. (My note: Mary was Mary Alice Kuhns as correctly spelled).

From "Death Register, 4, page 140-335, 1907-1916" at Wapello Co. Courthouse:

*Page 250, #261

Wm W. Stevens. Last address: 1606 W. Main, Center Twp., Ottumwa. BD: 10 July 1885. PB: Iowa. DD: 25 Feb. 1914. Age at death: 28 years 7 mos 15 days. Cause of death: tuberclosis. Dr. was J.W. Elerick. *page 290, #370

Stevens (infant). Last address: Center Twp, Ottumwa, Iowa. BD: 4 June 1914. PB: Iowa. DD: 1st March 1915. Cause of death: pneumonia. Age at death: 8 months 24 days. Dr. was W. J. Herrick. Buried at Ottumwa Cemetery on March 4, 1915. Undertaker: F. L. Daggett of Ottumwa. Father: W. A. Stevens (as recorded) (b. in Iowa). Mother: B. Campbell. Informant: Mrs. B. Stevens of Ottumwa. [My note: this infant was William Walter Lee Stevens]

From "Birth Records, Index Register of Births from 1884 to 1891, Book 2" (I think it's from the Wapello Co. Genealogical Society in Ottumwa):

*(page 109)

Walter Stephens, male, 8th child. Born 27 July 1887 in Ottumwa to 52-year-old Scot Stephens, laborer (born in Massachusetts), and to Sarah Cox (age 35 and born in IA as recorded). Dr. was D. A. LaForce of Agency.

From this, I guess William W. Stevens's middle intital stands for "Walter" since he named his own son as William Walter Lee Stevens. The elder William was called as "Wilbie" in some records by his mother. But I got his date of birth as 10 July 1885 from his obituary and cemetery record and one census record.

Also, William W. and Blanche Stevens obviously named their first born child "Scottie Samuel" after their own fathers...Scott Stevens and Samuel Campbell. They named their second daughter "Ellen Belle" from the middle names of their own mothers...Sarah Ellen Stevens and Isabell Nancy "Belle" Higgins. Then, they named their younger son after the elder William. I am not sure about the origins of Mamie and Christina's names, though.
