Welsh Family in Hilton

WELSH, FLEMING, SHERLOCK

I am researching the Welsh surname in Forfarshire (or Angus), Scotland. I have an Alexander Welsh b. abt 1818 in Forfar, Forfarshire, Scotland who subsequently went to America. I have located an Alexander who married Elizabeth Fleming in Scotland and now I come across them on the Iowa GenWeb site.
What I am hoping is that some helpful person could enlighten me as to how I might go about finding out who the parents are or maybe even the birthplace of the Alexander Welsh referred to in the History: Early Settlements and Settlers, 1881. This is assuming some sort of records were kept and are still in existence.
The Sherlock name comes in as I believe their daughter Agnes married a Stephen Sherlock as per various postings I've come across by Glen Eberts.
So many thanks for reading and hoping someone will be able to give me some direction.
Christine Mitchell.
