Middle school band first, high school band second
at Creston Balloon Days parade competition
The Mount Ayr Raider high school marching band placed second at the Creston Balloon Days parade on Saturday, September 19.Band members

students performed extremely well and were very focused. All judges gave good comments concerning the color guard, uniform, drum line, and playing
ability of the group. Improvements for future contests include spacing and alignment and corps-style marching. It was a great way to start the year, and

and looked great Saturday morning at the Creston Balloon Days Parade," said director Greg Storhoff. "The judges gave them high scores on appearance
and musicianship and especially liked that the students had their music memorized. Things to improve on for the upcoming parades include keeping the lines
straight and staying on the correct foot. It was a great experience and a successful day for our kids." The next performances for the Raider middle
school marching band include the Homecoming parade September 25, Southwest Iowa Band Jamboree on October 3 in Clarinda and the Tingley Halloween parade.

Middle School band places third in Clarinda
The Mount Ayr middle school Marching Band earned third place at the Parade Marching Competition at the 60th Annual SWI Jamboree held at
Clarinda on October 3."The Mount Ayr Raider middle school marching band impressed a lot of people at Clarinda that morning," said director Gregg
Storhoff. "The point total was extremely close with the top two bands: one judge scored the Raider middle school band first by quite a margin. Their sound
was great, the lines were very good, and the students were very focused that day. These kids have a lot of talent, and will definitely continue the
MAC bands' Tradition of Excellence." Drum major for the middle school Raider marching band are Katilyn Dolecheck and Rachel Gregg. The contest marching band
song was "Gonna Fly Now." The middle school marching band will perform at the Tingley Halloween Parade on October 31, and the band will also perform if
Mount Ayr hosts football playoffs.

MACHS band places first in competition
The MACHS Raider Marching Band placed first at the Loess Hills Fieldfest held on Saturday October 10 at Glenwood High School Ram Stadium.
"The students were exceptional on Saturday," said band director Gregg Storhoff. "The judges gave several positive comments on: general effect, flag colors,
marching and maneuvering, and individual discipline." Students who were especially given high marks include freshman alto sax soloist Trenton Stull, senior
piccolo soloist Alex Young and senior trombone soloist Wyatt Jackson. "It was by far the best performance so far this season," said Storhoff. On October 3
the Raider Marching Band placed fourth in field competition at the 60th Annual SWI Band Jamboree held at Clarinda High School. Wyatt Jackson was selected as
the MACHS Outstanding Marcher. The Iowa High School Music Association State Marching Festival will be on Saturday, October 17 at the Glenwood High School
Ram Stadium. The performance is scheduled for 10:50 a.m. Drum majors for this years' band are Lew Knapp and Samantha Crawford. The marching band show is called
"Latin Fire." Selections include "El Bandido" with Trenton Stull on alto sax solo, "St. Thomas" with Alex Young on piccolo solo, "Macho Nacho" featuring
the percussion and trumpet section, and "Malaguena" with trombone soloist Wyatt Jackson along with the color guard. Tiffany Boles is the color guard
director.

Raider band performs well
The Mount Ayr High School Raider marching band narrowly missed a Division I rating at the IHSMA State Marching Band Festival held at Glenwood
High School Ram Memorial Stadium Saturday, October 17.The final outcume from the competition - a Division II rating - was not what was announced to the
spectators at the even. Shortly after leaving the stadium, directors Greg and Crystal Storhoff and Carol Cason noticed a clerical error in the summary/point
sheet and immediately returned to Glenwood High School to bring it to the attention of contest manager David Clark. Clark recognized the error and told
the Storhoffs the rating would change to a I. The change was announced to the spectators at the stadium, and the Storhoffs told the students and chaperons
about the I rating. However, as the contest wrapped up and the scores were submitted to IHSMA Saturday evening, Clark realized he had misspoke and the rating
did not change. At that point he called the Storhoffs with his apology. The
score, 66.9, missed a I rating by only 1.10 point. All six Class 1A bands earned a II rating at the festival. "The band scored Division I ratings on
music execution, music general effect, and marching and maneuvering execution," reported Storhoff. "The last caption is what the students have worked on
the most, so earning a I in that area really means a lot!" Storhoff cited other highlights from the competition. "Our soloists Trenton Stull on sax,
Alex young on piccolo, Wyatt Jackson on trombone, Mercadez Birkenholtz on bass and the trumpet section were very well received by the judges," he said.
"Also given high grades was the trombone section. The band improved the intonation, blend and balance and total score from the Loess Hills Fieldfest
the week before by several points. The drill was given good marks by the judges. The color guard judge really enjoyed the flag changes and the dance
movements. The percussion section played very well, and the judges commented on their dynamics and musical contribution."
Storhoff said the band was aided by support from friends and family. "The crowd cheered the kids on through the entire show," he said, "and we want to
thank all the family members for supproting us." The performance at state marked the end of their high school marching careers for several seniors.
"We will certainly miss our seniors, including drum majors Samantha Crawford and Lew Knapp, Alex Young, Wyatt Jackson, Cameron Young, Macy Lilienthal and
Kody Weeda," said Storhoff. It's been a banner year for this group. Awards include second place at Creston Balloon Days Parade, fourth place at SWI Jamboree
with Wyatt Jackson selected as Outstanding Marcher, first place at Loess Hills Fieldfest, and lastly an excellent rating at State.

Jazzin' it up
Raider Jazz Band to state competition
The Mount Ayr Raider Jazz Band was selected to the Iowa Jazz State Championships to be held on Tuesday, April 5 at the Des Moines Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center. Competition time
will be posted at a later date.Jazz band members include saxophones Megan Reasoner, Amber Davison, Hannah Jackson, Kylee Smith, Bailey Anderson, Ashton Sheil and Trenton Stull; trombones Wyatt Jackson, Cassie
Brand, Abbey Schafer, John Young and Lanie Sheil; flutes Alex Young and Brieanne Byrd; rythm section Mitchell Jennett, Myles Green, Cameron Young, Lew Knapp., Kirsten Young, Kody Weeda, Mercadez Birenholz and Josh
Cox; piano Elsie Schafer. The Raider Jazz Band qualified as a wild card selection. Wild card invitations are determined by the Iowa Jazz Championships Board of Directors every March. Bands become eligible for a wild
card invitation by meeting one of the three necessary criteria (the Raider Band qualified with #1 and #3): 1) Beat a band that is an automatic qualifier at an independant jazz festival in Iowa. 2) WIn an independat
jazz festival in Iowa with at least two bands in that class. 3) Finish third in a district jazz festival with at least four band entered. Tickets for the day's competiton are $10 and cover admission to all day time performances at both
locations. Tickets for the day contest are not sold in advance. The Raider Band has competed at Jazz Championships several years, including 1983, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2010.
The Iowa Jazz Championships show cases 60 of the state's finest high school jazz emsembles. It is held in Des Moines every April and features 15 groups from each of the four Iowa high school classifications. All emsembles perform in the daytime competition, and the top two bands from each classification perform in the evening finals competition. The event was founded by Iowa jazz educators over thirty years ago and continues to be an important event on the Iowa high school musical landscape each spring.

Merrill V. Perry concert Monday
The Merrill V. Perry Supper and Concert is on Monday, April 25 at the elementary school lunchroom and gym featuring all the bands at Mount Ayr Community.The Spaghetti Supper begins at 5:30 pm and is
$6 a person. The concert begins at 7 p.m. This concert will mark the final performance of 7-12 band director Greg Storhoff, who will retire at the end on the school year. The Jazz Band will perform "Children of Sanchez,"
"You Are Too Beautiful," "Birdland" and "Southside Shuffle." The fifth grade band will play "Mary Ann" and "Power Rock," followed by the sixth grade band playing "Bag O' Blue" and "Dr. Rock." The middle school
band will perform "Themes from Star Wars," Highlights from Harry Potter," "Mustand" and "The Invincible Warrior." The high [school] band will perform "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Music for a Darkened Theatre" and
"Acclamations." The entire 5-12 mass band will end with the School Song. Carol Cason directs the fifth and sixth grade bands.

Middle School band receives
I rating at Red Oak Band Festival
The Mount Ayr Raider middle school band earned a I Rating at the Red Oak Middle School Band Festival held on Saturday, April 30 at the Red Oak High School auditorium.The band played two selections: "The Invincible Warrior" by David Shaffer and "Mustang Concert March" by John Higgins. "The Raider middle school band has had a banner year: winning first place at Creston Balloon Dales, third place at the SWI Band Jamboree, and a I Rating at Red Oak's Concert Band Festival," said director Gregg Storhoff. "The students performed like professionals. The intonation and balance were very good, and the overall tone of the group was outstanding. The judges especially enjoyed the percussion solo on 'The Invincible Warrior' piece and were very impressed by the students' stage presence. The brass and woodwind also recieved superior ratings. This was a great way to end the year." MAC middle school bands have earned I ratings in 1994, 1995, 1997, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2016. Mount Ayr students to be 2016 Iowa Ambassadors of Music
Twelve Mount Ayr Community High School musicians will be members of the Iowa Ambassadors of Music (IAM) 2016 European Tour July 3-18.Students in the IAM choir include Breanne Haley, Elsie Schafer, Kaley Adams and Byanca Smith. Macy Lilienthal, Cassie Brand, Chase Henry, BrieAnn Byrd, Josh Cox, Hannah Jackson, Tyler Jones and Kaitlyn Dolecheck will play in the IAM band. Mount Ayr Community high school music director Greg Storhoff and his wife Crystal will serve as advisers for the IAM 2016 Tour. This will be their fourth European tour. These individuals will join a select group of 350 student musicians and advisers from across Iowa on a 20-day event that includes a farewell concert at Grinnell College. The Ambassadors 17-day concert tour will cover England, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Liechtenstein. Being a member of Iowa Ambassador of Music tour means that through performance the participants participate in a sharing of cultures. Most tourists visit and take from the experience - the Iowa Ambassadors of Music also give. One of the highlights from past tours has been when the student realized the USA's national march, the "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa, is a well-known and popular march in Europe. The choir's opportunity to perform its selections in setting with over a thousand year heritage gives the students a chance to add a new page in the cultural venue of Europe.
The IAM tours Europe on alternate years. To be considered for membership, students must be recommended by their school music teachers as having superior music skills and possessing high character.
Lee Nelson, Director of Choirs at Wartburg College in Cedar Rapids will direct the choir, and Dr. Bill Carson, director at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, will direct the band. The 2016 European tour will be Iowa's 15th trip. Over 5,000 student musicians have performed for European audiences since the group was estabalished in 1988.
NOTE: Mr. Greg Storhoff retired at the conclusion of the 2015-16 school year.
