Hawkins given state FFA degree at Ames

One Mount Ayr Community high school FFA chapter member was named a[n] Iowa Farmer degree recipient at the state FFA leadership conference held in Ames last week.

In addition the chapter had four teams in competition, including one gold medal team, and received two chapter awards as part of the meeting.

Iowa FFA degree

Senior Lyndon HAWKINS received the award, joining 167 chapter members since 1940 to be awarded the degree, the top award that FFA members can earn on the state level.

HAWKINS, son of Rick and Marilyn HAWKINS of Munt Ayr, has a supervised ag experience project in growing Christmas trees. He annually sells trees and adds to the tree farm at the family acreage.

He has been very active in competitions, taking part in the greenhand quiz, chapter quiz, soils, livestock, meat and crop judging constets as well as being a member of the gold medal farm business management team at the state meeting.

He has been active in many local activities of the club as well over the years.

Competition results

Four teams representing the Mount Ayr Community FFA chapter took part in contests at the state level. The farm management, pictured at right, of Brad WILSON (right), Adam TRIGGS (left), Lyndon HAWKINS (middle), and Lincoln PARRISH (not pictured) received a gold medal and placed eighth out of 72 teams from across the state taking part in the contest.

Receiving silver medals were two teams. The greenhand quiz team of Levi CAMERON and Andy MERCER received a silver as did the members of the food science team of Jacque BAKER, Oakel PETTINGER, Bobbie COMER and Adam AUTEN. This was the first time the school had a team in the food science competition.

The ag sales team of Dustin STARK, Matt WEEDA, Daniel GRAHAM and Lucas ANGUS brought home a bronze medal.

Other activities

The chapter received two awards at the conference -- the WHO Public Relations award and the One Star Sponsor of the Iowa FFA Foundation award.

Delegates to the conference were Andrea LARSEN and Michael INLOES. Also attending were Jake STEEN and Kegan BISHOP. Jack COOK is advisor for the chapter.

Speakers during the conference included Andrea McCREA and Dan McCARNEY. Despite the snow on Monday, the move of the meeting to Ames from Des Moines was very successful, COOK said.
