Class of 1972 40th Reunion

The graduating class of 1972, Mount Ayr Community high school, met on July 21, 2012 for their 40th class reunion at the Mount Ayr American Legion hall at 5:30 p.m. for social hour, followed at 6:30 p.m. with a dinner catered by the American Legion women.

John ALLEN opened the reunion with a word of prayer and words of remembrance for the class members who are no longer with them, Bobby MILLER, Terry SAVILLE, Betha DAVIS, Kim BECK, Paula HIXON, Tom TERRY and Danny WEEDA.

Approximately 40 class members were in attendance and 25 spouses or significant others.

A special guest was Mr. Fred STARK, a music teacher at Mount Ayr Community schools for approximately 10 years. He spoke about his experiences at Mount Ayr and pointed out that for a smaller school, Mount Ayr had a very large participation in the band program, in great part due to the efforts of Merrill PERRY.

After a delicious meal prepared by the American Legion women, Lynn RINEHART invited class members to each speak briefly giving an update on their lives and families. It was very interesting to hear and compare the number of children and grandchildren of each class member and to hear about occupations and interests of their fellow class members.

John ALLEN, assisted by Lynn RINEHART, then conducted an auction of two bricks painted with a picture of the old high school. The bricks were actual bricks from the old school. The bricks were donated by Joyce (GOLLIDAY) and Ray BELVILLE. The bricks each brought $150 after a rousing round of bidding.

Then Lynn RINEHART surprised attendees with an additional offering of two more school bricks, one with a picture of Roger MAIN, and the other brick with a picture of Kent BLUNCK. These bricks each brought $25 during the auction. Proceeds from the auction ($350) were donated to the Mount Ayr Aquatic Fund to support their efforts to raise money for a new aquatic center in Mount Ayr.

Earlier in the day 16 class members rode a "float" in the Ayr Days parade, which was enjoyed by all, even in the July humidity and heat.

Some class members visited the re-stored Princess Theater and toured the Mount Ayr Depot.
