Mount Ayr wrestling room almost done
MOUNT AYR — Construction started on the new Mount Ayr Community High School wrestling room in spring 2010. Now, more than two years later, the room is nearing completion.
The new wrestling room will not only provide a better space for wrestlers to practice, but it also doubles as a tornado shelter.
"We are working on a punch list for what needs to be done," said Joe Drake, Mount Ayr Community School superintendent. "The final thing that needs to be done is the architect, who was hired by Hymbaugh Construction, needs to come and sign off that the project is complete."
There is currently no specific date as to when that will take place.
Wrestling room
The original contract for the new wrestling room stated the room was scheduled to be done by August 2011.
Three Mount Ayr contractors were working on the project: Brent Ricker, owner of Ricker AC Heating and Plumbing, Rich Brundage, owner of Brundage Electric, and Jim Hymbaugh, owner of Hymbaugh Construction.
Hymbaugh, the general contractor for the project, was present at the April 9 Mount Ayr School Board Meeting, where frustrations were voiced by the board on why the room was not completed.
At that board meeting, Hymbaugh gave the date of April 20 for the room to be completed enough for inspectors to come in. At the May 14 board meeting, the room was still not to that point.
The students and faculty at Mount Ayr Community High School are now using the wrestling room, as all of the inspections were passed. The weight equipment has been moved from its temporary location into the new space.
Because the room is also a tornado shelter, it will now be used when tornado drills are conducted at the high school.
"We have to have two drills before the first of the year, and two after," said Drake. "And we will be using the shelter for those drills now. If we would have had a tornado before it was completed, we still would have used the room because it was the safest place in the building."
Drake added, signs need to be made to direct people to the safe room if needed.
