'I'm going to Disney World!'
The Mount Ayr Community concert band has been selected to perform at Disney World in
Orlando during spring break.
The Mount Ayr Community high school concert band has once again been selected by Disney Performing Arts to be part of the
entertainment at the Walt Disney World Resort. The performance will be 11:30 a.m. on March 18 at Future World area in the
Epcot Center. This will be the fourth Florida band trip. The band performed at Walt Disney World in 2002, 2006 and 2010.
"All groups who wish to perform at Disney World are required to submit an audition DVD performance, a picture of the band
in uniform and the application," explained MACS band director Greg Storhoff. "All materials are sent to the Disney
Performing Arts of reveiw, and our application was sent in November. I was very excited that we were selected to play at
Epcot, and this trip will be a wonderful experience for the kids and parents."
An itenerary of the 2014 trip will be forthcoming in the near future. Students attending the trip include Cassie Brand,
Neesie Brand, Laura Campbell, Shaniece Conklin, Amber Cox, Sam Crawford, Gavin Dine, Breanne Haley, Wyatt Jackson, Mitchell Jennett,
Holly Karr, Logan Kelley, Lew Knapp, Jed McCreary, MaKayla O'Mailia, Matt Poore, Megan Reasoner, Blake Roberts, Ashton
Sheil, Grant Staats, Quency Vos, Allison Wallace, Alex Young and Cameron Young. Chaperones accompanying the band are
Janie Young, Melynda Crawford, Fred Staats, Janelle Staats, Brenda Karr, Tracee Knapp, JoAnn Sheil, Carold Cason, Greg
Stofhoff, Crytstal Storhoff, Chris Conklin, Cherri Vos, Vera Haley and substitute Lisa Conklin. Other family
members accompanying the group include Luria Staats, Reas Knapp, Trace Knapp and Chania Vos.

MACS bands performs well at festivals
The Mount Ayr high school band competed at the IHSMA Large Group Festival at Bedford on Friday, May 9, and
earned a II 'Excellent' rating.The band members performred two selections: 'Exaltation' by James Swearingen and 'Hosts
of Freedom' by Iowa composer Karl King. "The kids played great on Friday night," said MACHS band director Greg Storhoff.
"We had a couple of intonation and entrance problems which hurt our overall score. The three judges scored the band very
high the band very high on music selection, blend and balance and stage presence." Also earning high scores was
Allison Wallace's alto szx solo in 'Exaltation.' "We were actually very close to a I rating, only being two points
away," addied Storhoff. "We're a little disappointed that we came so close to earning the 'I' rating, but it was an
excellent performance, and I'm really proud of our kids. We will miss our graduating band seniors, including Holly Karr,
Quency Vos, Allison Wallace and Matt Poore and wish them all the best." The members of MACHS band include:

The Mount Ayr middle school band earned a I (superior) rating at the 29th Annual Richard Simpson Memorial Middle School
Band Festival at Red Oak high school on Saturday, May 3. "Earning a I rating is not easy," said director Greg
Storhoff. "The students are adjudicated by three judges who listen to articulation, dynamics, blend and balance and
intontion, plus stage presence and musical selection. The middle school band scored very high in all categories,and all
the judges were impressed by the brass, woodwind and percussion sections. It was a great performance, and I am
extremely proud of these fine students." The middle school band earned a I rating at this festival in 1994, 1995, 1997,
2006, 2009 and 2001. The band members performed two selections, including "Liturgical Fanfare" by Robert W. Smith and
"Canticum" by James Curnow. The middle school band awards will be given to the students at Awards Day on May 28.

Addy Flamang, MaiLyn Taylor, Samantha Schaefer, Sammy McGill, Emma Mobley and Paige Lynch. Alto Saxes: Brianna
Dory, Amber Davison, Hannah Jackson and Kylee Smith. Trumpets: Dylan McAlexander, Lucas Wurster, Will Young and Lanie
Sheil. Trombones: Abbey Schlafer (also French horn), Bradley Wurster, John Young, Mason Smith and Wesley Armstrong.
Bariton: Bobby Baker. Tuba/Bass: Jacob McCreary and Josh Cox. String Bass: Mercadez Birkenholz and Logan Eaton.
