50 year class reunion planned

The Mount Ayr high school graduating class of 1955 is planning a 50 year class reunion this spring over the Memorial weekend.

A social time and dinner will be held Friday evening, May 27, at the American Legion building in Mount Ayr. On Saturday evening, May 28, class members will attend the Alumni Dinner held at the Mount Ayr Community high school.

Addresses are being sought for the following people: Ray COX, Dennis EVANS, Gary KING and Robert DERICKSON TEDDER. If anyone has a current address for any of these people, please contact one of the committee members. Pat BRADY, Colleen GREENMAN, Lila OVERHOLTZER or Kay SICKELS.

Mount Ayr Class of 1955 Reunion

Members of the 1955 graduating class of the Mount Ayr high school met on Friday, May 29, 2010, at the REC meeting room to celebrate their 55th class reunion. Twenty-two former classmates plus several spouses, gathered for an evening of visiting, eating and catching up.

Present were Renabell ADAMS, Lowell and Joy AUSTIN, Anna Lynn and Harry BEVINGTON, Pat BRABY, Miriam CLUTTER, Norma Kay DAVENPORT, Jack and Mary FETTY, Phil and Pattie FOLTZ, Verlee and Mel GALBRAITH, Colleen GREENMAN, Cindy and Jack HARPER, Helen and Jake HUNT, Mildred JOHNSTON, Howard MARTIN, Lila and Jim OVERHOLTZER, Kay and Bob SICKELS, Roberta TEDDER, Katherine and Junior WEBB and Joyce WILEY. The evening meal was catered by Jan FORD. During a brief business meeting letters were read from former classmates who were unable to attend: Marilyn CALDWELL KIMBLE, Loretta MATHANY KELLY and John HOOD. There was also mention made of recent conversations with Phyllis GUNTER EVANS, Marvin POWELL, Dean RAUCH, Marvin RICE and Bob WALTER.

Of the 63 in the senior class of 1955, 14 have passed away. They were remembered with their pictures on a picture board on the memory table, along with former classmates who moved away during their high school years.

Plans were made to have another reunion in three years. Those on the committee were Pat BRABY, Miriam CLUTTER, Phil FOTZ, Cindy HARPER, Helen HUNT, Mildred JOHNSTON, Bob and Kay SICKELS and Joyce WILEY.

On Saturday morning a number of classmates met for breakfast and more visiting at Peggy Sue's. Later several enjoyed a tour of the restored Princess Theater thanks to Pattie FOLTZ, Pam POORE and Karen BENDER.

Mount Ayr Class of 1955 Reunion

The Mount Ayr high school class of 1955 held their 58th reunion Friday evening, May 24, 2013, at the Southwest Iowa REC building. An enjoyable time was spent visiting, remembering past experiences and taking pictures. Jan Ford prepared the food.

Their deceased classmates (18) were remembered, the most recent being Lila (REYNOLDS) OVERHOLTZER, Marvin RICE and Paul BEARD.

Those attending were Renabell (Elmore) ADAMS of Knoxville, Joyce WILEY of Minburn, Larry and Norma Kay (CORLL) THOMPSON of Ames, Mel and Verlee (MORGAN) GALBRAITH (both members of the class) of Arnold's Park, Harry and Anna Lynn (IRVING) BEVINGTON (both members of the class) and Junior and Katherine (WEBB) WION of Des Moines, Ron and Loretta (MATHENY) KELLY of Afton, Roberta (DERICKSON) TEDDER of Holly Springs, NC; Jack and Cindy (WHEELOCK) HARPER of Pensacola, FL, and Miriam (CAMPBELL) CLUTTER, Phil and Pattie FOLTZ, Bob and Kay (DAUGHTON) SICKELS (both members of the class), Pat (RUSK) BRABY and Helen (SICKELS) HUNT, all of Mount Ayr.

Several met Saturday morning at Jamie's Coffee Mill & Deli for coffee and more conversation.

The class plans to meet for their 60th reunion on Friday, May 22, 2015, at the same location for which Phil FOLTZ will make arrangements.

The following were named as committee members to plan the next reunion: Harry and Anna Lynn BEVINGTON, Loretta KELLY, Helen HUNT and Cindy HARPER.

Class of 1955

  • The Mount Ayr High School class of 1955 held their 60th reunion May 22, 2015, at the Southwest Iowa REC building, with nineteen class members registering. An enjoyable evening was spent visiting, remembering past experiences and taking pictures. A delicious meal was prepared and served by Jan Ford.

    Those present were: Miriam Campbell Clutter, Bob and Kay Daughton Sickels, Pat Rusk Braby, Howard Martin, Helen Sickels Hunt, and Phil and Pattie Foltz, from Mount Ayr; Renabell Elmore Adams from Knoxville; Marcia Dalbey Shurtleff from Dallas, Texas; Mel and Verlee Morgan Galbraith from Arnolds Park; Mildred Drake Johnston from Urbandale; Joyce Wiley from Waukee; Ron and Loretta Matheny Kelly from Afton; Harry and Ann Irving Bevington from Des Moines; Mary and Jack Fetty from Clive; Lowell and Joy Austin from Merriam Woods, MO; and Gary King from Cedar Rapids. The group was honored to have a former teacher, Grace Moser, as a guest.

    We mourned the loss of three classmates since we last met - Shirley Sickels Karr, Jo Rees Louden, and Larry Miller. A special table was set aside in honor of the deceased classmates who were remembered with a memory candle.

    Tentative plans were made to meet again in two years on Memorial weekend at the same location.
