The Game
Blocked kick saves homecoming 21-20

By James Saville

Mount Ayr Community ran their Distric 6 mark to 3-0 win with an exciting 21-20 Homecoming win over Nodaway Valley in Mount Ayr Friday night.

"We knew the Wolverines had many talented athletes and they were getting better each week, so we were not surprised with the close outcome," said coach SHOWALTER. "It was a hard hitting game and their superior numbers allowed them to rest some of their key players, but our guys made some key plays to allow us to escape with a great win."

"We operated our offense well into the first half," observed coach LAMBERT. "Nodaway Valley was able to upset our tempo in the second half keeping us from making many first downs, which consequently allowed them to kind of wear us down in the final 24 minutes."

Korey BEAMAN put the opening kickoff in the end zone, so the Wolverines began their opening drive at the 20. Spencer MILLER'S running picked up two first downs before a nice tackle by Mitch GROSE forced Nodaway Valley into a punting situation at the 50-yard line.

Mount Ayr Community began their first possession on their own 20 after a 30-yard punt by the Wolverines. The Raiders scored the first touchdown on a 12-play, 80-yard drive. David SHOWALTER completed five passes to Mitch GROSE on the drive, the final completion being an 11-yard pass for the touchdown with 3:18 left in the first quarter. The Raiders were unsuccessful on the PAT making the score 6-0.

Mount Ayr Community got the ball back as the defense gave up no yards on three plays with the Raiders beginning their second possession on their own 34. David SHOWALTER, Matt JONES and Jordan STEWART rushed the ball to the 29 as the first quarter came to a close.

ROBINSON hauled in another SHOWALTER pass for 16 yeards and the second Raider touchdown with just over a minute gone in the second quarter. A SHOWALTER to GROSE pass play was successful for the PAT making the score 14-0 in favor of the Raiders.

Nodaway Valley took BEAMAN'S kickoff back to their own 34-yard line. Spencer MILLER carried the ball eight times in the ensuing possession topping off the drive with an outstanding 19-yard and TD jaunt cutting the margin with 5:02 left before half. The PAT was good and the score was 14-7 as Mount Ayr Community took the ball for the second time in the quarter.

The Raiders picked up another first down before coughing up the ball at the 40-yard line. Zach ROBINSON got the ball right back for the Raiders as he picked off a Nick FOX pass at the Raider 17. SHOWALTER hit Cameron WOODY on passes of 12 and 15 yards as the offense moved the ball down the field. Jordan STEWART rumbled for a first down at the Wolverine 20 to give Mount Ayr Community another scoring chance before half time. Korey BEAMAN missed the 27-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

It only took Mount Ayr Community 15 seconds to get on the scoreboard in the second half as Zach ROBINSON took the kick off 93 yards to the house and BEAMAN added the PAT and the Raiders enjoyed a 14 point advantage, 21-7.

Nodaway Valley went three and out after a good kick off return by the Wolverines had given them the ball on the 41-yard line. Neither team could move the ball effectively until midway in the third period.

Nodaway Valley got good field position when Spencer MILLER returned a Korey BEAMAN punt 40 yards to the Raider 25. The Wolverines moved inside the Raider 10 to have the ball first and goal on the eight. Garrett PETERSON threw MILLER for a six-yard loss and the Raiders were able to keep Nodaway Valley out of the end zone.

The Raiders were able to pick up only one first down, but a good punt and a Wolverine pentalty forced Nodaway Valley to start the next drive at their own 32-yard line. Quarterback Nick FOX put the visitors in the red zone as he turned a broken play into a 57-yard run down to the Raider 13. Spencer MILLER scored his second TD of the game on a 10-yard run with 9:13 left in the final quarter. Sam LOWRY drilled his second PAT and the margin was just seven at 21-14.

Things did not get any better for the Raiders as Spencer MILLER returned the next Mount Ayr punt 40 yards to the home team's 30-yard line. Zach ROBINSON tipped away a Nick FOX pass in the end zone stopping another Wolverine scoring threat giving Mount Ayr the ball at their own 13. The offense could muster only one first down forcing BEAMAN to punt the ball back to Nodaway with just over two minutes left.

It looked as if the Raiders were in good shape as Matt SOBOTKA intercepted Nick FOX'S long pass, but a penalty nullified the play, giving the Wolverines a first down at the Mount Ayr 22.

The weary defense was unable to prevent Brett THOMPSON from making a driving catch of a nine-yard pass from Nick FOX, bringing the Wolverines to within one point with just 24 ticks left on the clock.

The defense saved perhaps their best play for the last as Blake MICHELSEN came on a defensive stunt, got his big "bear" paw on the pigskin causing the PAT to fall harmlessly to the turf bringing a thankful roar from a large homecoming crowd.

Dusty DRAKE aggressively secured the Wolverines onside kick preserving the one-point victory for Mount Ayr Community.
