'Raiderland -
Where dreams come true'Homecoming for Mount Ayr will run Monday, October 3 through Friday, October 7. The theme for this year's celebration if "Raiderland - Where Dreams Come True." The Mount Ayr High School student council has set the traditional dress up days to include Monday - Sleeping Beauty (Pajama) Day, Tuesday - Tacky Tourist Day, Wednesday - Disney Day, Thursday - Dynamic Duo Day and Friday - Spirit Day. The Mount Ayr volleyball team will host Murray Monday, October 3 to kick off the week's activities. Action gears up Thursday, October 6, featuring a number of popular events. The Friends of Football supper will run from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. in the high school commons. Attention then shifts to the gymnasium for the jersey auction set to begin at 6:45 p.m. Following the auction will be the coronation of the Homecoming queen. [Queen candidates below] The princess is Irais Trujillo, daughter of Salvador and Mable Trujillo of Mount Ayr. This year's prince is Tyler Hanawalt, son of Josh and Lizzie Hanawalt of Mount Ayr. The dodgeball tournament and senior parents' skit will follow the coronation ceremonies. Thursday night will cap off with the coronation of the 2016 Homecoming king. [King candidates below] Homecoming Week concludes with the parade beginning at 1:30 p.m. leading to the community and school pep rally at the football field at approximately 5:30 p.m. That evening, the band boosters will host a cook-out at the field beginning at 5:30 p.m. For the Homecoming football game, the Mount Ayr Raiders will entertain Woodward-Granger with kick off-set for 7 p.m. The queen, her court and their parents will be recognized in front of the home bleachers at halftime of the football game. Homecoming will conclude with a dance at the high school following the football game.

Homecoming a big hit!
From the dress up days to the jersey auction to the parade to the pep rally to the victory on the football field to the after game dance, Homecoming 2016 was another rousing success in Raiderland.

Homecoming Dress Up Day winners

Once the theme for homecoming is chosen, they move on to the dress up days for the entire week. Monday: sleeping beauty day/PJ day, Tuesday: Tacky Tourist Day, Wednesday: Disney Day, Thursday: Dynamic Duo Day, and Friday: Spirit Day.The winners on Monday were seventh grade: Pj Lynch and Samantha Muller. Eighth grade: Avery Dickerson and Alexa Smith. Ninth grade: Joan Trujillo and Kaitlyn Dolecheck. Tenth grade: Chase Smith and Jentri Ruby. Eleventh grade: Mason Smith and Abbey Schafer. Twelfth grade: Haylea England and Molly Anderson. Faculty: Cyndi Sobotka and Becca Jo Pennington. Tuesday's winners were: Seventh grade: Brady Bickel and Maddie Stewart. Homecoming Dress Up Day winners

Homecoming 2016 had its share of frills and thrills, including a pie throw at the homecoming pep rally. This activity had much more meaning, though, than just the pleasure of sabotaging a few of the school's favorite teachers. All the proceeds from the pie throw were generously donated to the family of Bobby Baker. Mount Ayr football cheerleaders placed buckets in each high school classroom to collect donations from students and other teachers. After a week of donating, the buckets were set out on Thursday night during the football jersey auction for any last minute contributions. After all money was collected, the top six teachers with the most money in their bucket "won" a pie thrown in their face by the senior football players and Bobby Baker. It was a gratifying event that was in the name of a great cause. Thank you to the Mount Ayr cheerleaders and everyone else who took part in raising more that three hundred dollars for Bobby Baker and his family.

Tyler Hanawalt and Irais Trujillo are Homecoming Prince and Princess

For Homecoming, Tyler Hanawalt was chosen as the 2016 prince. Tyler is the son of Josh and Lizzie Hanawalt. Tyler said that when he found out that he was the Homecoming prince, he felt like one, too. He said that his favorite thing about Homecoming was being the prince and getting to ride in a truck for the parade and he was very excited about it. Some other questions that he answered were, whom did he think would win the homecoming float contest, which he didn't know. I also asked what his favorite Disney character was and he said it was Lightning McQueen from the movie Cars. Another question was whom he thought might win Queen and King and he said he wasn't for sure, but he knew he was the Prince! Irais Trujillo

This year, Mount Ayr's Homecoming Princess was Irais Trujillo. Irais is the daughter of Salvador and Mabel Trujillo of Mount Ayr. She has three older brothers, Joan, Erki, and Adam Trujillo who also attend school in Mount Ayr. Irais was "a lot" excited to be the Homecoming Princess this year. I asked her what she liked about Homecoming, and she responded, "Love being a princess, because they are more special than boys. Boys can only be cowboys, not princess." She was also excited to look pretty by putting her makeup on. Her makeup consists of Chap Stick, a mirror, and a file for her nails. Irais described her dress as being "like Snow White's, with lots of blue, little red, and tons of sparkles." She was not scared to be Homecoming Princess, in fact, she was looking forward to being in the "teacher" parade.

This year, Mount Ayr Schools hosted yet another successful homecoming. Throughout the week, students of each grade in the middle school and high school decorated their hallways with their best school spirit, and each high school class put together a parade float. Each hallway had a Disney theme, to go a long with this year's homecoming theme: Raiderland: Where Dreams Come True.For hallways, first place went to the freshman, second place was taken by the sophomore, seniors took third place, and juniors received fourth place. As the week began to wind down, the homecoming parade took place Friday afternoon. Each high school class participated with a class float. Winning first prize was the freshman with their "Snow White" themed float. Second place went to the juniors with their "Toy Story" themed float. Third
place was taken by the seniors and their "Up" float. And finally, the sophomores received fourth place with their "Under the Sea" float. School organizations and clubs participated in the parade as well with their best
floats. The MAEA (Mount Ayr Education Association) received first place. Little Raider Preschool received second place, and the Ringgold Raider Football Team took third place. There were also entries from the community in the homecoming parade. In first place was US Bank, the second place float went to Clearview Home and Estates, and third place went to Mount Ayr Healthcare.

Raiders move past two losses to defeat Woodward-Granger

Friday, October 3 was a great night for a Raider homecoming and celebration with the Raiders grabbing their first win after two losses. Facing Mount Ayr this week was the Woodward-Granger Hawks. The Hawks came into the meeting 3-3 and left 3-4. Mount Ayr won, 28-14. "We got off to a great start," said coach Delwyn Showalter. "The opening kick return set the tone and playing with pride and passion and we certainly saw a great deal of those qualities. Before the Raider-Interstate-35 game on October 17th, Willie Baker was selected as the Raiders "Kid Captain" and walked the field with the captains to participate in the opening coin toss. Baker was in a tragic car accident this past summer and has had to work hard to fully recover. Baker was also given a signed football from the Raiders.
