Cal finished first in his weight class of 182 pounds. Marcus Daughton finished first in his class at 152, and Josh Cox finished third at 285.

Daughton breaks school record

The Mount Ayr wrestling [team] got back into action Tuesday, January 17, as they hosted a triangular meet with Southwest Valley and Van Meter. The Raiders then competed in the John J. Harris Tournament in Corning Friday and Saturday, January 20-21.

Coming off action this week, Cal Daughton now holds the school record for career pins. Daughton's current total of 104 breaks Joe Ricker's previous record of 102.

Raider advance one wrestler to districts

The Mount Ayr Raider wrestling team advanced one wrestler to district competition from the Class 1A Sectional 10 held Saturday, February 4 at Truro.

Senor Cal Daughton won all three of his matches by fall on his way to the sectional championship in his 170-pound weight division. Daughton now advances to district competition this Saturday, February 11 at Pleasantville. Competition starts at noon.

Two Raiders placed third, falling one place short of advancing to district action.

After suffering an 8-2 defeat in the second round, 152-pounder Marcus Daughton wrestled back into a match for second place against I-35's Jacob Steilage. Daughton fell to Steilage by a 6-4 decision to finish in third place.

Nick Vanbuskirk followed a similar path to Daughton's. After losing by fall in the second round, the Raider 182-pounder wrestled back into a second-place match against I-35's Dante Arzani. Vanbuskirk lost by fall to place third.

Daughton advances to State

Senior Cal Daughton will be representing the Raiders at the State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena [Des Moines] that begins on February 16 and ends on February 18.

Daughton is 49-7 with 46 wins by pin and has two wins by technical.

Recently Daughton competed in the 1A district 5 district tournament and came out in first place to secure his spot at state, wrestling at 170 pounds.

In his first match, Daughton won by fall in 5:44 over Cael Lester of Pleasantville. His next opponent was TJ Dierking from Southeast Warren. Daughton won by a 9-5 decision.

Cal will face Dakota Vance of Rockford. Vance is 33-7 with 24 pins, two technicals and two majors and weighs in at 182 pounds.

The matchup between Daughton and Vance will take place in the second session on Thursday, February 16. The session begins at 1:30 p.m. The complete tournament schedule can be viewed at http://www.iahsaa.org/2015/04/2017-State-Wrestling-Schedule.pdf.

53 seconds in first round of State

Cal Daughton recently represented the Mount Ayr Raiders at Wells Fargo Arena in the State Wrestling Tournament.

Daughton finished round one with a pin over Dakota Vance in 53 seconds.

Moving onto the quarter-finals, Daughton was pinned by Hudson's Taylan Entriken in 1:41.

Daughton wrestled in the consolation bracket in round two and fell to Nick Haynes of Missouri Valley after 1:13.
