Band barely misses I rating at Festival
The Mount Ayr Raider marching band competed last week at the IHSMA State Marching Band Festival at Treynor. And, according
to director Greg Storhoff, the band missed a I rating by a "field goal." "The band gave the best performance of the
year, earing a I Rating in Music Execution and a I Rating in the Percussion Section," reported Storfoff. However, this
year the IHSMA added two more judges: a color guard judge and a percussion judge. "The final score was only three points
away from a I Rating, due mostly to the Marching Execution caption," Stofhoff said. Other IA bands results included
Riverside - II, Bedford - II, Lenox - II and Nishnabotna - II. Music included "Party Rock Anthem" with quad soloist Lew
Knapp, "We Are Young," and "Some Nights" featuring Grant Staats, Blake Roberts, Alexandra Young and Mercadez Birkenholz,
along with the trombone section including Blake Roberts, Wyatt Jackson, Cassie Brand, Laura Campbell, Abbey Schafer,
Bradley Wurster and John Young. Other band members included Bailey Anderson, Laneesa Brand, Samantha Crawford, Brevin
Deskin, Gavin Dine, Brianna Dory, Logan Eaton, Addyson Flammang, Nathaniel Fletchall, Breanne Haley, William Hung,
Mitchell Jennet, Jennifer King, Macy Lilienthal, Dylan McAlexandr, Megan Reasoner, Ashton Sheil, Katie Sickels, Mason
Smith, MaiLynn Taylor, Kody Weeda, Lucas Wurster, Cameron Young, Kirsten Young and William Young.

Mount Ayr students part of POI Band Festival performance
On March 9 Mount Ayr Community School hosted the Pride of Iowa Conference Band Festival on the Graceland University Campus in
the newly remodeled Shaw Center. Guest director was Nathan Sletten from Earlham High School."Mr. Sletten did a wonderful job of conducting and had
excellent rapport with the students," said MAC band director Greg Stofhoff. "It was very obvious that both students and the guest director enjoyed their
time together. The band students were very well prepared, thanks to the work of the POI band directors, and Mr. Sletten mentioned how enjoyable it was
to have students who already knew all parts to all selections." The morning and afternoon sections were directed by the Graceland faculty, including
woodwind director Dr. Erin Bodner, percussion director Adam Groh and brass instructor Dustin Williams. "Having our students work so closely with such
dynamic directors was a high point of the day and extremely educational for our students," said Storhoff. The evening concert was very well attended
and well received. The Graceland Symphonic Concert Band performed first. "The high school students were very impressed to see a university band," said
Storhoff, "and the band directors said that it was every educational for their kids. The POI portion of the concert was outstanding, and at the conclusion
of the program our students received a standing ovation." Graceland University provided lunch and dinner for the students and directors as well as
printing the programs. ~ ~ ~ ~
