Mount Ayr Community High School marching band members sit all decked out in their new uniforms. The new,
lightweight uniforms replace the wool uniforms the band had worn for 22 seasons.
The last time the Raider High School marching band had new uniforms was the fall of 1992, and the color guard in 2005. But,
thanks to the Band Boosters, and Mount Ayr school board, both groups have new uniforms this fall.
"The 22-year-old marching
band uniforms looked really great from the distance," said director Greg Storhoff. "But it was a different story from up
close; with the stains, rips and holes, they had seen their better days. One day a student said, 'My mom wore this uniform
too!' It's amazing the uniforms lasted this long." The nine-year-old color guard uniforms were also very worn and needed
to be replaced.
The Band Boosters, students and directors would like to thank the Band Boosters and school board
for their generous support of the marching bank.
This year the marching band will perform the show called "Fun Nights"
at all the home football games.
Band members who are football players stay with the team for pre-game. At halftime the
freshmen and sophomore members march. "The crowd never sees the whole group perform, as we always have varisty football
players in band. But I thinnk it's important for the kids to be with the team at pre-game," said director Greg Storhoff.
The band will compete at the Loess Hills Fieldfest in Glenwood on October 11 and State Marching Band Festival on October
18.
