years and has been co-coaching with Derek Lambert for 14. Together, the coaches have a 92-38 record. "Longevity is
one of the contributions to our success," Coach Showalter stated. "Coach James Smith had been coaching for 36 years and
Coach Lambert is in his 17th year. We are able to keep things stable and continue building a great program here
and building upon what we learn every year." Last year the Raiders finished third in the district with a record of
8-3. In the playoffs the team beat Panorama and lost to Van Meter, who ended up inteh championship game. . . .
Fortunately for Raider fans the cupboard isfar from bare. Returning are first team all-state lineman Joe Riker,
second team all district players Lincoln Martin, Rieley Weehler, Jake Ricker, Jed McCreary and Kyle Dolecheck, and
honorable mention all district players Caleb Schnoor, Jacob Taylor and Tucker Winemiller. After several years
of success in Clas 1A, the Raiders will be going into unfamiliar territory this year as they drop to ClassA
competition and play teams they haven't faced before or teams they haven't gone against in a while. . . . Regardless
of class, Coach Showalter still expects the Raiders to be one of the top four teams come play-off time. "It is a
new era in Raider football," he said.

STILL RAIDER PROUD! Mount Ayr falls in Dome playoff game
A group of seniors present the state semi-final trophy to the Raider faithful following
the loss to Logan-Magnolia. Pictured are (L-R) Tyler Triggs, Jake Ricker, Tucker Winemiller, Connor Giles, Grant Staats
and Jesse Ruby. "The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the
determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand."Those words from
legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi perhaps best expemplify the Mount Ayr Raiders in their 28-7 loss to top-ranked Logan-Magnolia
in the Class A semi-final game at Cedar Falls last week. Already behind 28-0 midway through the second quarter, the
Raiders could have rolled over and quit. Instead, they out-played and outscored Logan-Magnolia over the remaining two
and one-half quarters, and despite the reality of an emotional final game for the seniors, the Raiders held the semi-final
qualifying trophy high as they sang the school fight song in front of an estimated 1,500 cheering fans for the final
time in the 2014 season. Transcription by Sharon R. Becker, January of 2015
