Fun in the sun with Mickey
Raider band performs at Epcot

by Greg Storhoff, MACHS Band Director

A total of 21 student musicians and 14 chaperones enjoyed their spring break touring Disney Parks, playing on the beach and soaking in the sun and fun on their six-day Florida excursion.

At 7:30 a.m., the Mount Ayr Concert Band left MACHS on Sunday, March 16 on a Lorvel Tour Charter Bus headed to Florida.

On Monday, March 17 the group arrived at Disney Hollywood Studios (formerly known as MGM).Although the weather was rainy, all of the rides are inside. . .

Tuesday was concert day!

The band members and chaperones departed the hotel for Disney's Epot. The MACHS band performed at the Melody Gardens at Innovations West in Future World at 11 a.m.

To get ready for the concert, the band members, director and three chaperones, Fred and Janelle Staats and Carol Cason, were moved to backstage Epcot. Very few people go backstage in a Disney Park, and we were told to take no pictures.

Included in the concert program were "Selections from 'Titanic,'" "John Williams Movie Highlights," "America," "Full Swing Ahead," "Autumn Sunset" and "Back in the Day." Soloists included Allison Wallace, Quency Vos, Neesie Brand and Lew Knapp. Alyssa Rieper, the Supreme Travel tour guide who was with us the entire trip, told the group, "You guys put on an amazing concert; everyone there was saying great things about you."

After performing, the bank traveled to the Golden Corral for a buffet paid for by the Band Boosters. Afterwards we drove to the Magic Kingdom for the rest of the afternoon and evening. . . Wednesday after breakfast we departed for Cocoa Beach for shopping at Ron Jon's Surf Shop and time on the beach. For several students this was their first time seeing the ocean. . . The group returned at Mount Ayr on Friday evening at 9 p.m. . . .

"What an incredible week," said director Greg Storhoff. "A huge endeavor such as the Florida spring break band trip puts a tremendous amount of responsibility on all the chaperones and the director, but all the kids were just wonderful! The band played great at Epcot. They were extremely well mannered at all the parks and represented the community of Mount Ayr and Ringgold County very well. I am very proud to be their director."

Students taking part in the trip include Cassie Brand, Neesie Brand, Laura Campbell, Sam Crawford, Breanne Haley, Wyatt Jackson, Mitchell Jennett, Holly Karr, Logan Kelly, Lew Knapp, Jed McCreary, MaKayla O'Mailia, Matt Poore, Megan Reasoner, Blake Roberts, Ashton Sheil, Grant Staats, Quency Vos, Allison Wallace, Alex Young and Cameron Young.

Chaperones included Janie Young, Melynda Crawford, Fred, Jannelle and Lauria Staats, Brenda Karr, JoAnn Sheil, Carol Cason, Vera Haley, Tracee, Trace and Reas Knapp and director Greg Storhoff and Crystal.
